STEM Expo
Step-by-Step Instructions
Stem Expo Step-by-Step Instructions:
Fill out the registration form online (located on the 'Registration' page.)
Decide on a project category (see below for descriptions). Visit our "Useful Links and Resources" page on this website.
An INVENTION is commonly considered a new device or process. Some inventions are improvements on pre-existing devices, processes, or ideas. Designing and creating an invention may begin with a question or an existing problem that you’d like to solve with your invention. You will be following the Engineering Design Process to complete your invention.
A DEMONSTRATION is a display that shows and explains a scientific concept like how an electric motor works. It shows how something works or explains a scientific process.
A SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY / EXPERIMENT is a traditional type of science fair exhibit. An example would be "What fertilizer works best on plants?" or "What is the strongest brand of paper towel?" In these examples, you ask a question and then perform experiments to get the answer.
An ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION category is intended to show environmentally innovative ideas. These ideas may be new products, procedures, inventions, or promotional projects.
3. Click on the project category page that you have chosen (invention, demonstration, experiment, OR environmental innovation). Each project category type is located on the navigation menu to the left, follow those directions, and begin your project! The participants do NOT need to fill out all of the paperwork. It is meant to guide the children through the process and help them keep track of the information gathered.
Teachers or parents may advise throughout the process. Parents should have the students do the actual work but may assist in the process.
The following are prohibited: fire, weapons, glass, dangerous chemicals, or animals permitted. Also no “exploding” projects, such as volcanoes.
Expensive or irreplaceable fragile items should not be displayed. Valuable items essential to the project should be simulated or photographed.
4. The participants need to complete a trifold to display the information collected throughout the project along with explanations and pictures. The trifold MUST have the students' names on it.
5. Bring your completed project and trifold after school on Wednesday, March 13th anytime between 3:45 - 4:30 to set it up.
6. Participants must attend the STEM Expo and be accompanied and supervised by a parent on Thursday, March 14th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm.
Students must stay with their projects during the majority of the Stem Expo and be able to explain and/or demonstrate it to visitors.
MTES does not assume responsibility for loss or damage to any exhibit.
All projects must be taken home at the end of the Stem Expo.
