What a week it has been at The Grove! Our first week back after half-term has certainly been a busy one, with our Ofsted inspection bringing some unexpected changes to our plans.
Firstly, I would like to apologise for the events we have had to rearrange this week. I appreciate that families make arrangements to attend these occasions, and I am grateful for your understanding and flexibility. We will be in touch next week to rearrange anything that has been postponed.
One of the real highlights of the inspection was hearing how positively parents spoke about The Grove. It was lovely to hear the warmth, appreciation and confidence that families have in our school. Thank you to everyone who shared their views and, more importantly, for the continued support you give us. Strong relationships between home and school make such a difference to our children.
I would also like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful staff team. Their dedication, hard work and commitment to our children have been particularly evident this week. I know how much they care about getting things right and ensuring that every child has the very best opportunities. I am incredibly grateful for everything they do.
Finally, Chocolate Milkshake Friday has officially begun! This is one of our new ways of celebrating good attendance and punctuality. A big well done to all the children who have been in school and on time this week. Being in school every day, ready to learn, makes a real difference, and we want to recognise those positive habits while continuing to support families where attendance is more challenging.
As we head into November, the weather is certainly getting colder! Please make sure children come to school dressed appropriately for the changing weather, with a warm coat each day. We will continue to make the most of our outdoor spaces, even as temperatures drop, so being prepared is important. Please also ensure that coats, hats and gloves are clearly named to help us reunite any lost items with their owners.
Have a lovely weekend!

Headteacher
We have had a super start to the new term, and the children came back ready to learn! Here is a peek at what we have been up to this week. In maths, we have been learning all about the number 4! The children have been exploring different ways to represent 4, counting objects accurately, and recognising the number around the classroom. In phonics, the children enjoyed learning some new digraphs (two letters that make one sound): ll, ff and ss. We have been practicing reading and blending words containing these new sounds such as bell, hiss, and huff.
We have been sharing lots of seasonal stories about autumn! We took time to talk about the changes in the weather, noting the cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and shorter days. Our creative area has been full of autumnal colours! The children enjoyed Autumn fruit printing and then creating pumpkins pictures with them.
The children in Year One have really enjoyed starting our new PE topic, Team Building! This week, they became superheroes and worked with a partner to complete a range of fun and exciting challenges. They showed fantastic teamwork, communication and cooperation as they helped and encouraged each other. We are so proud of our little superheroes!
Year 2 have had a fantastic time in Science this week learning about living things. They explored the differences between things that are alive, not alive, and never alive, and enjoyed working together to sort and classify a range of objects.
In English, we were learning how to use a dictionary. We used this skill to create the glossary for our non-chronological report.
In music, year 3 were warming up our faces and bodies before we started learning a new song.
This week, Year 4 have been exploring the use of metaphors in their writing. Inspired by The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, the children created imaginative and powerful metaphors to describe the moment the Iron Man steps off the cliff. We have been incredibly impressed by their creativity, originality and ability to use figurative language to bring their ideas to life. Their writing has been both vivid and engaging, showcasing excellent progress in developing descriptive techniques.
Year 5 have made a fantastic start to the new half term, returning to school happy, refreshed and ready for their learning! We enjoyed celebrating Harvest Festival with a non-uniform day, and we were delighted by the generous donations brought in for Storehouse. In our assemblies, we have been learning about the Good Samaritan and exploring the importance of showing compassion, kindness and care towards others.
In English, we have begun researching Mount Everest in preparation for writing our own non-chronological reports. The children have been fascinated by the facts they have discovered, including that Everest stands at approximately 8,849 metres tall! This links beautifully with our new Geography unit on mountains, where we have been using atlases to explore famous mountain ranges and identify which continents they are found in.
In Maths, our hard work on number sense is beginning to pay off as we apply our improving times table fluency to our new unit on multiplication and division. Finding factors of numbers has proved a little tricky, so please do practise identifying factor pairs at home to help build confidence and fluency.
Finally, in PE, the children were excited to begin our new unit on dodgeball! We started by developing our throwing and catching skills, as well as practising quick reflexes and reactions. There was lots of enthusiasm as we worked on these important skills and prepared for our dodgeball games.
It has been wonderful to see the children return with such positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning. We are looking forward to another exciting half term together!
Science: A huge well done to our fantastic Year 6 children for completing their science projects on the heart and circulatory system this week! We have been so impressed by the creativity, effort and scientific knowledge shown in their work. The children have demonstrated a brilliant understanding of how the heart works and how blood travels around the body. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. Well done, Year 6 – keep up the amazing work.
RE: This week, Year 6 learnt about different celebrations and festivals, exploring how they help us remember important events from the past and celebrate special moments in the present. The children discussed celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Diwali, Remembrance Sunday, Chinese New Year and VE Day. They also explored the reasons behind these celebrations, their traditions and symbols, and how they bring people and communities together.
Writing: This week in Writing, Year 6 have started writing their balanced arguments about women’s rights, inspired by the Suffragettes’ struggle for equality and the right to vote before the First World War. The children have explored different viewpoints and learnt how to present arguments for and against an issue, using evidence and persuasive language to support their ideas.
Maths: This week in Maths, Year 6 have continued developing their multiplication skills, focusing on multiplying three and four -digit numbers by two-digit numbers. The children have been practising the formal written method of long multiplication, improving their accuracy and confidence when solving increasingly challenging calculations.
Well done to the STARS of the WEEK who were:

Year 1: Zainab

⭐ Halloween Safety: Key Message for Children
STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, STAY TOGETHER AND STAY SAFE!
🎃 Have fun, be kind and make safe choices this Halloween.
Every minute of the school day matters.
Our gates open at 8:40am and close at 8:55am. From the moment children arrive, learning begins. Between 8:40am and 8:55am, children are already settling into class and practising important skills, including spellings.
Arriving after 8:55am means children are not just late — they are missing moments of learning and the calm, purposeful start to the day that helps them succeed.
Please help us by ensuring children arrive between 8:40am and 8:55am, ready to learn from the very start.
Moments matter. Attendance counts.
Should you need to report your child's attendance please call the school office on 01664 562554, or on MCAS by 8.00am. Please explain the reason for absence.
A reminder that Breakfast Club is now open earlier, at 7:30am, giving families greater flexibility with their morning routines.
Even better, there will be no need to book in advance! Families will be able to use Breakfast Club without having to reserve a place beforehand.
We hope these changes will make mornings easier for our families and help more children enjoy a positive start to their school day.
To help us keep our new reading books safe, all children will need to bring a suitable school bag to school tomorrow to bring their new reading home. If your child does not have a bag with them, unfortunately, we will not be able to send their reading book home until they bring one in.
Each reading book will be provided in a protective plastic wallet. Please keep the book inside this wallet whenever it is not being read and return both the book and wallet to school together.
Please help us to take care of these books. They are brand-new resources that we are very proud to have in school and form an important part of our investment in ensuring that every child has access to high-quality books and the opportunity to become a confident, successful reader.
Thank you for helping us look after and protect our new reading resources.

Looking for a funded Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) place from winter 2026? Here’s what you need to know.
From September 2026, Free School Meals (FSM) became available to children in all households receiving Universal Credit, regardless of income. However, receiving Free School Meals does not automatically mean your child qualifies for a funded HAF place.
HAF is still focused on Targeted Free School Meal criteria, not those on expanded FSM.
From September 2026, the existing HAF eligibility rules still apply:
Your child receives free schools meals and remains eligible for a funded HAF place.
If your annual household income is above £7,400: your child may receive Free School Meals but will not qualify for a funded HAF place under the standard criteria.
Unsure? Ask your local authority to confirm your child’s eligibility.
Some children who attended HAF before may now be ineligible, even if they still receive Free School Meals.
This is because Transitional protections, that were in place since 2018, ended after the 2025/26 school year. These protections allowed some children to keep Free School Meals and HAF eligibility even when their family’s circumstances changed.
If your child no longer qualifies for HAF, you can explore:
Paid holiday clubs: places may be available, including at clubs offering HAF-funded places.
Tax-Free Childcare: depending on your circumstances, this may help with childcare costs. https://www.gov.uk/tax-free-childcare
Local support: check your council website for other holiday activities, childcare and family support. https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk
