Secondary Art

Middle School

Fall Trimester

During fall trimester, we focus on how the elements of art can manipulate the mood, theme, and subject of a piece. Each project is designed to get students to think about their own experiences and bring them into their own pieces 

Winter Trimester

During winter trimester, we focus on art from ancient Egypt, feudal Japan, and ancient Greece. Each grade will focus on a specific content area and recreate some art from these era's with their own styles added in.

Spring Trimester

During the spring trimester, we focus on straying away from conventional methods of art. Each grade will work with some form of modern or abstract art, as well as focus on a social justice project they will work on towards the end of the trimester. 

Art Club

Art Club Schedule 23-24

Art Club will run during the 2023-2024 school year on a rotating schedule from 2:45 - 3:30. Students must join the Art Club google classroom to be able to come to art club. Students are allowed to show up when they are available. *Schedule is subject to change without notice*

Set Design

Set Design will run during the 2023-2024 school year on Thursdays from 4:45-6:45pm. Set design meets after casts have been picked before the show until tech week. More days may be added on as needed. You MUST be a part of Art Club to join set design. Reach out to Ms. Ilebode if you have any questions.

High School

Introduction to 2D

This is a half year art class where students will learn basic approaches to drawing and painting using a variety of mediums and subject matter, including portraiture, perspective, and still life. Emphasis will be placed on observational drawing.  Color theory and working with the elements of art & principles of design will be introduced.  Electronic technology will be used for references and research of artists and artwork. Homework drawings will be a necessary part of this course.  *Note: In order to continue with the Visual Art Sequence students will be required to take the Foundations in Art or Art Packet Submission with department approval.

Introduction to 3D

This is a half year art class where students will learn basic approaches to 3 dimensional construction using a variety of mediums and subject matter, including plaster, cardboard, and clay. Color theory and working with the elements of art & principles of design will be introduced.  Electronic technology will be used for references and research of artists and artwork.  *Note: In order to continue with the Visual Art Sequence students will be required to take the Foundations in Art or Art Packet Submission with department approval.

Foundations in Art

Curriculum for this foundation are course is structured to teach students the fundamentals of  visual art. Students will spend a major portion of the year learning how to realistically recreate what they see. With this focus in mind, observational work will be emphasized as students learn various standards-based concepts and skills, including how to depict light and shadow, correct proportions, one and two point perspective, and color theory. Electronic technology will be used for reference to research artists and artwork. Design concepts will be learned as students explore composition through a variety of media. 

Advanced 2D I, II, III

 In this advanced art course, students spend a full year immersing themselves in 2D visual art. Students will use a variety of materials such as but not limited to pencil, colored pencil, oil pastel, acrylic paint, and watercolor. At the beginning of the year, a series of assignments will be completed to help deepen previously taught skills. Students will also then create works based on large themes such as identity, beauty, or transformation to create deeply personal work(s) drawing on past experience. Three levels allow students the opportunity to revisit this class for credit year after year.

Photo I, II, Adv

Photo I: students study black and white darkroom photography. They develop and print their own film. Students use the camera as a tool to increase their observational skills and work towards developing their own photographic style. Camera orientation, darkroom techniques, and traditional printing are taught as well as an introduction to a variety of photographers and photographic movements. Students have regular readings, and weekly shooting assignments. Students write artist statements about their own work and write responses to other artist’s work to practice analyzing and critiquing photographs

Photo II: Students work to further advance their skills developed in Photography I. Students use the camera as a tool to further improve their observational skills and conceptual understandings. Students learn various manipulative processes in and out of the darkroom, gaining an increasing repertoire of photographic processes. 

Adv Photo: Facilitates learning opportunities for experienced photography students. Students are introduced to photojournalism, professional studio work, and what it means to be a working artist. Students are expected to work more independently on technical problems, aesthetic challenges and manipulative processes in order to create photographs that make compelling visual statements. The end of the year will culminate in a portfolio composed of a cohesive body of work and a breadth showing their range of abilities.  Students will use DSLR cameras provided by the class and pay an activity fee of $35 for photography supplies.

Advanced Photo Concentration Projects Site

Advanced 3D I, II, III

In this advanced art course, students spend a full year immersing themselves in 3D visual art. Students will use a variety of materials such as but not limited to cardboard, plaster, and clay. AP Studio Art 

This course is designed for students who want to further investigate their artistic practice. Using research, design journals, critiques, and teacher assistance, students will create and submit a portfolio for AP: Drawing, AP: 2-D Art and Design, or AP 3-D Art and Design. Students will select a topic/theme to investigate for the year and will complete both sections of sustained investigation and selected work quality of the AP portfolio. Students will use design journals to document their growth and artwork while they develop their personal voice.  

Portfolio Development

This course is designed for students to create a portfolio for application for higher education. The class may be taken as a full half or half year credit. Students, with teacher assistance, will work independently to create two dimensional and three dimensional works, photograph these works, and create a digital portfolio as well as artist statement to accompany the pieces.
