Students extend learning beyond the classroom walls
At MEF IS we define learning as the ongoing process of constructing new understandings of the world through experiences and interactions. Students throughout the Primary school engage in learning in classrooms but also through fieldtrips around Istanbul. Teachers plan opportunities for students to enhance their learning through these experiences so that the connections are made for students by not only talking about new things but also seeing them and doing them. Field trips are an integral part of inspiring and challenging our students to think in new ways.
Grade 5 students feel safe at school and at home. They know what the child abuse is and good touch and bad touch. They know what to do to protect themselves.
I am proud of my Grade 4 students. They know their responsibilities to get proper education. They appreciate their parents to meet their educational expenses.
Let's celebrate. Grade 3 students are able to read facial expressions and body language of others. They are more self aware of their own feelings and they are more socially aware. They have started to feel proud of themselves, their skills and successes.
Students in Grades 6-12 take exams on October 18-23. These dates were shared previously in curriculum guides, newsletters, and an email. The exam schedule is located at exam week 1 schedule . Study guides are available to students on Wednesday, 10 October. Mrs. Kristi Wheeldon, the Secondary Counselor, will work with middle school students to prepare them mentally. Teachers will work with students to discuss study strategies and study guides. Students absent from an exam must have an excused absence, such as a school sponsored event or an illness with a doctor's report, to take a make-up exam. Make-ups will take place October 23-26. Students absent from school for the October 19th football match will take make-up exams on 24 October. Below is this year’s exam schedule.

The Türkiye Omurilik Felçlileri Derneği (TOFD), which translates to the Turkish Spinal Cord and Paralysis Society, held a RUN WALK (RUNTOFD) for persons with disabilities in order to raise awareness of the needs of persons with disabilities living in Istanbul. Thanks to the TOFD organization, Istanbul has made great improvements in building more ramps and installing elevators to help persons with disabilities to be able to enter and exit areas across the city. Our students contributed to a great cause, wore the t-shirts proudly, and ran the 3 km course alongside students on wheelchairs from all over the city. It was a great and successful event. We were all so proud to represent MEF IS and be a part of the RUN WALK of 2018.
‘Autumn University Week’ took place between October 8-12 with approximately 30 university representatives visiting MEF IS from top schools from all over the world. Secondary students were able to discuss one-on-one university requirements, courses of study, costs, and much, much more with representatives.
Our MEP group travelled to Athens this week to participate in their first conference of the 2018-2019 school year. They had a great experience and enjoyed representing Turkey.
