We look forward to seeing you at our Parent - Teacher Conferences which are on this Saturday, 12th October. Please ensure you have booked a time to meet with your child's teachers. If you require help to do so, please contact us at school.
The PTA will be there with baked goods for you to purchase. Please support them as all funds raised go to charity.
This week it has been the normal business of teaching and learning. We had our first Student Council Meeting this morning. This gave me an opportunity to talk about the expectations we have for students when they transition between classes and the expectations in the cafeteria. We have some new posters that you may see around the school which promote walking feet and quieter behaviour. In the coming weeks, Ms Kate and myself will be looking out for children displaying these positive attributes and praising them for their actions.
With the weather cooling down and the threat of rainy days in the coming months, I would like to remind you of the wet day morning procedures.
On rainy mornings, the children will go straight to the Assembly area on the lower ground floor for supervision, instead of going to the ECC lower playground. On these days, Pre School and Pre K can go straight to their classrooms. Kindergarten A & B will also go to the assembly area. We would appreciate if you could talk to your children about where to go on rainy days. Our heating has been turned on but we suggest that children have jackets to wear outside for those colder days. We will of course, direct students to where they need to go when they arrive to school. Thank you for your support.
We look forward to our ECC Sports Day on Tuesday, 15th October and our Grade 4 Assembly on Friday, 18th October.
Warm regards,
Sharlene Carki
Our student council members represented themselves responsibly in their first Assembly today. They talked about what friendship looks like and feels like. They talked about treating others with kindness and checked on everyone's understanding.
Enjoying fruit in MFL
As part of the Unit of Inquiry Who We Are in Grade 2, children learn about fruits and vegetables in MFL. This supports the central idea of “People’s awareness of choices transforms ideas and actions about health and well-being”. In our final activity, “A healthy picnic,” Melisya made a great connection. “It’s a choice for our body because fruits keep us healthy!”
Turkish lessons
Considering the Unit of Inquiry Where We Are in Place and Time in Grade 4, children started learning about introducing themselves and getting to know someone in Turkish language.
Revolving around the central idea of people may choose to migrate as a response to opportunities, students now learn the effects of migration on individuals and communities by learning the local language and having connections to their environment.
5th Graders are exploring the essential question "Where do artists get ideas from?" Focusing on observation, they created observational drawings inspired by the nature on the campus.
We have many animal lovers amongst us as MEF IS. Our Animal Care Club is setting up a fundraiser to raise money for our local cats and dogs. If you would like to contribute, please contact Ms Donna to find out how you can help.
The club presented a power point in our Student Council Assembly to raise more awareness about caring for dogs and cats.

There is an exciting exchange program available to students sponsored by the 'Canadian Academic Partnership' (Akademik Ortalık Programı). This program is overseen by Mr. Emrah Sarlak and Safa Ilgin (GMs of Calculus and Edubucks), who visited the campus this past Wednesday, October 9th, to introduce the program. Academic programs to study in Ontario, Canada, vary in length from 1 month (12 years and above) to 1 semester (14 years and above) to a full year (14 years and above). For more information, please contact Malcolm Ringo or Emrah/Safa at uppercanada@mef.k12.tr
For the past five years, there has been a "MEF Campus University Week" that coincides with the CIS Education Day in Istanbul. The College Counselling Department (CCD) arranged for a range of university representatives from several countries to visit the MEF campus this past week to speak with interested students and parents. The uni reps were from the following: CANADA - Guelph, Ryerson, Queen's, Carleton, Dalhousie, Concordia, Huron @ Western; USA - American (AU), Bentley, Washington State, Oregon State, Hofstra, Lynn, Salve Regina, Santa Barbara (USBC), Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD); UK - Reading, Essex, Brunel, Warwick; EUROPE - La Salle (Spain); ASIA - Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST). In addition, there were two presentations (AU and US College Tour Financial Aid). The CCD is pleased to inform there will be approximately 20 more uni reps visiting from now until the December Break, with more in the spring (March-April in particular), for a total of approximately 80 university visits this year. This is indeed an impressive number of visits by any private high school in the world, and all this takes place here at the MEF campus. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students!
Exam Week 1: 17-22 October
Exam week 1 is fast approaching! This is an excellent opportunity for students to reflect on previous performance and develop effective study plans. Students should take special care of themselves with a healthy diet and plenty of sleep during study and exam time. Subject teachers will make study guides available to students one week before the start of exams. The exam week 1 schedule is included here.

IBDP FAQ
We know that understanding the IB Diploma Programme is important for our grade 11 and 12 parents/guardians who want to support their child throughout their studies. Click here to visit the IB blog for the top 15 IB Diploma terms that all parents and student should know.
Exam anxiety is a real problem which affects many individuals, so finding ways to combat those destructive emotions is a crucial skill to master. Mindfulness has been shown to be an effective strategy for accomplishing this, and this year students in grades 6 - 8 were introduced to the practices of Mindfulness in one of their Skills Day sessions.
This week in PSHE we have been preparing ourselves for the upcoming exams so Mindfulness has been a central theme.
Grade 6 students have been focusing on Mindfulness techniques to remember during exams. They have been creating posters to put up in their homerooms to remind them to stay calm and focused while studying and taking the tests. Grade 7 has also been looking at Mindfulness but has also connected it with good study habits. Grade 8 has been using goal setting and growth mindset as part of Mindfulness by creating a visual representation of themselves based on the IB Learner Profile.
