ELA

Grading

To calculate a student's final grade, assignments are weighed as follows:

Reading Comprehension: 45%

Writing: 30%

Small Group Work: 20%

HW: 5%

Students will receive a hybrid grade each trimester.

On the Parent Portal, you will see a traditional number grade (a percentage out of 100).

You will also receive a standards-based report at the end of the trimester. The standards-based score shows the level of proficiency a student demonstrates at an independent level.Given an identified standard, students will earn a score of Advanced (a 4 on a written assignment), Proficient (3), Needs improvement (2), or Warning (1).

For example, a student may have gotten a 100% on an essay, but it may have taken four rewrites to get there, so you may see proficient instead of advanced on the standards-based report.

Year at a Glance:

The goal in 5th grade ELA is to transition students from learning to read to reading to learn. We will analyze texts, make annotations, infer themes using critical thinking skills, and synthesize new information.

We will have reading and writing workshops during class, in which:

  • Strategies will be taught and modeled for students during a mini-lesson.

  • Student will practice reading and responding to text both independently and in small groups.

  • New learning will be shared at the end of class through writing or participating in a discussion.

Writing Term 1

The drafting process in English will be a combination of paper and pencil and computer-based in order to give students practice reinforcing expected skills and to develop writing stamina over time. We will look at the best ways to present the information, making sure we have accurately explained our topic.

This term we will be focusing on Narrative writing and the students will write a Memoir. We will read examples of memoirs in "My Life in Dog Years" and "Marshfield Dreams"
