Required Summer Work for Students Enrolling in an Honors Level Course
In our Honors courses we aim to strengthen general problem-solving skills and further build on, and develop, the skills that will allow careful mathematical thought, while building the foundation for more advanced math courses and concepts.
To be successful in an Honors course, you will need a solid foundational understanding of concepts from previous math courses. The design of this summer packet is two-fold; helping to ensure you are prepared for the Honors class and can be successful, both at the onset of class, and for the year.
The packet is designed to help you self-assess your understanding of some of these concepts, as well as your ability to apply different mathematical skills to the topics you have learned. Please complete all of the work honestly, without a calculator and/or outside resource (Desmos, Photomath, etc).
The packet is designed to help develop your independence. As you check your answer (yes, the answer key is provided) you are encouraged to reach out to friends/family/online resources (Khan Academy, YouTube, etc) to help reinforce your understanding.
The most successful students in Honors courses are students that are not only able to understand concepts, but also know how to support their own learning when topics become challenging. This packet will provide you the opportunity to identify your strengths, as well as topics you need to review before the class begins. We will be building on these skills and ideas throughout the course, with these ideas being assumed knowledge from previous courses.
When you return to school in the fall, we will clarify questions in the packet in our first class. The focus of this first class will not be on teaching you concepts you were unable to answer, but to reinforce and clarify misconceptions you corrected during your summer work. While the packet will not be collected, nor graded, you can expect a graded assessment on the content in the packet within the first week of classes.
Have a great summer! We look forward to working with you next year in class!
