Program of Studies
Program of Studies
Our Program of Studies increases students studio skills in a linear way, and builds upon previously taught curriculum to promote skill development, critical thinking, and success in the arts.
9TH GRADE
Students start by building foundation skills in the arts with semester electives. First Foundations, then we highly encourage students to take Drawing and Painting to continue developing their breadth of drawing practice.
10TH GRADE
Students can elect to take various studio courses that explore different mediums and methods of making art. They will increase their knowledge acquired in Foundations, and learn more advanced techniques related to drawing, color theory, space, and form. Students interested in building a portfolio are encouraged to take Fine Arts, a full year course that uses more choice and critical thinking skills than some of the semester electives.
11TH & 12TH GRADE
Students can begin to build their portfolio, taking Advanced Fine Arts and Portfolio. These are offered as full year courses that are especially encouraged for students to take if interested in building portfolios to submit for college. These courses allow students to take on assignments that demand greater independence, critical thinking skills, and creativity. Students will become more accomplished at controlling various media to make deeper and more sophisticated visual statements. They will use advanced techniques related to color theory, line, value, space, and form. Students also have the option of taking various studio electives specific to certain media.
CPII with HONORS OPTION
Various courses listed above are CPII, with an honors option. This requires students to independently develop a series of three works by the end of the semester ( two for Ceramics classes) that emphasize the skills taught in class, but focus on one unifying theme. Students may work on this series at home, after school, during study, or in class if assignments are finished early. Throughout this series, students will employ the elements of art and the principles of design to develop quality artwork that embodies a clear understanding of technique, composition, and concept. They should convey their own voice throughout this series, while exemplifying strong studio skills, and a unifying theme.
