Dear families,
With the ever- increasing technology our children are exposed to, reading seems to be becoming less and less appealing to students. Reading comprehension and interest are ESSENTIAL in learning. According to the American Library Association, “the act of reading permits students to learn new vocabulary and concepts. If a student falls behind in comprehension for their age/ grade level, then students struggle to process new vocabulary and concepts presented in textbooks and other literature. Difficulty in reading may translate into poor school performance. These difficulties can then evolve into students losing interest in reading and entering a state of learned helplessness.”
Unfortunately, we are seeing this more and more as educators. Therefore, reading must be reinforced at home. Due to the American fast-paced lifestyle, extracurriculars, and more and more parents juggling full-time jobs, fitting reading in can be quite unrealistic.
I am providing a link to the Medina County library’s playaways. Playaways are similar to mini ipods (they are the “new audiobook”). Please consider visiting the public library to check one out. Students can listen to the playaway while reading along in the matching chapter book. You will need to check out the chapter book separately. The purpose is to increase reading skills and improve students’ attitudes toward reading. Researchers have demonstrated that the use of technology exposes struggling readers to different types of literature and assists with vocabulary acquisition (Stone-Harros 2008).
