This website is a novel unit dedicated to the instruction of The Book Thief. A variety of activities have been created for this novel to extend student analysis and comprehension of the many complexities found throughout the pages.
The goal of this project was to design activities that meet the rigorous academic needs of an advanced middle school curriculum while maintaining a high student interest that goes beyond the novel.
Markus Zusak is an Australian-German writer best known for The Book Thief and The Messenger, two novels that became international bestsellers. In 2014, he won the Margaret Edwards Award.
"The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak tells the story of Liesel Meminger, a young girl in Nazi Germany, who finds solace and a love for words through books, while her foster family, the Hubermanns, hide a Jewish man, Max, in their basement.
