President's Message

Letter from our President (click down arrow to expand full letter)

Dear Meadows Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! My name is Nancy Bong, and this is my second year as President of the Meadows Parent Teacher Organization. I have two children attending Meadows - Isaac in 5th grade and Nathan in 3rd grade.

I'd like to tell you a little bit about the PTO here at Meadows. We are a volunteer group of parents who want to make the school the best place where our children can learn. The PTO's main goal is to support the school, the principal, the staff, the teachers, all our students and all our families.

We do that in two main ways. First by organizing, planning, and funding school and community events in order to build a sense of community. The second means of supporting the school is by fundraising. The PTO provides specific programs for Meadows that the district is unable to provide, or that our teachers are requesting to help with education that our students are receiving.

Some of the things the PTO brings to the community are our Crab Feed, Welcome Events, all Field Trips, food related events such as Taco Tuesdays or What's For Dinner Wednesdays, our Fall Carnival, Movie Nights, our International Potluck, School Dances, and the Scholastic Book Fair. All of these things are made possible by our wonderful volunteers.

Last year, the PTO raised $66,136. The main sources were from our Fall Membership Drive, Corporate matching, and General Fundraising. Last year's numbers are unusual as we weren't able to hold our annual Crab Feed, which is the biggest fundraiser the PTO has each year. Shelter-in-place occured a week before the Crab Feed was scheduled and we had to cancel it.

This coming school year, the PTO Executive Committee has discussed where our funds will come from. The Board recognizes that this may be a very difficult time for some families and they may not be able to give. Because there are items that the PTO will still be paying for, we are still having our annual membership drive. However, our goal of $20,000 is about half of what we raised last year. We really appreciate any donations that families are able to contribute, but we also recognize that some families may not be able to due to personal hardships.

This year will also look different in terms of where the PTO will spend our funding. This is changing day by day based on school needs and also what the district has been able to provide. However, we anticipate a large portion of our budget to be towards Technology, Student Enrichment, Classroom/Staff Supplies, and Community/School Events. If there are ways that we can help our teachers teach our students virtually more effectively, the PTO would love to fund those.

It's hard to know what needs to be funded versus what can be run by volunteers. It doesn't mean we shouldn't have these, but we will be thinking of how we can fundraise, socialize, and build community in different ways.

I'd like to close with a call for support. If you are able to support the PTO financially, that is wonderful and we appreciate that immensely. We also need parent volunteers to help organize virtual events, or provide technology support. All of these are means to bring our Meadows community together.

Things will look different, but I have hope that we'll still be able to support our school, support our community, and have a great year!

Sincerely,

Nancy Bong

PTO Membership Drive

Learn more about our Annual Membership Drive (click down arrow to expand)

Our Annual Membership Drive is especially important this year, as we are limited in the amount of fundraising we'll be able to do. In the 2018-2019 school year, the PTO spent approximately $375 per student. Please join the PTO and contribute a direct donation as part of our Membership Drive. Our goal is to have 150 families join this year, and to raise $20,000 during the Membership Drive.

Thank you for all of your support! Please email membership@meadowspto.org with any questions.

The Pedrozas (from L-R)Hailey, Jen, Keio, Tony, Reese

Jen setting up for one of the many Scholastic Book Fairs she has organized throughout the years

Meet Amanda Laidlaw and Jen Pedroza!

Q: Hi Amanda and Jen! Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourselves for our newsletter. Please describe your families for our PTO members.

Amanda: My husband Doug and I have two children, both at Meadows. Aubrey is in 4th grade and Griffin is in 1st grade.

Jen: My husband Tony and I have three children all in different schools. Hailey is in 7th grade at Taylor, Reese is in 4th grade at Meadows, and Keio is 4 years old and attends preschool St. Andrews.

Q: How long have you lived in Millbrae?

Amanda: 10 years

Jen: 11 years.

Both: We've been neighbors for a decade!

Q: What do you love about Meadows?

Amanda: It’s such a nice community, you feel like your friends become family. The teachers and staff really want to get to know you.

Jen: I agree with Amanda. I love the community, and it’s right up the street so we can walk there! There’s a good relationship between the parents and staff.

Q: What is your role on the PTO Executive Committee?

Amanda: Co-VP of Membership, previously I was Secretary for 3 years.

Jen: Co-VP Membership, I've served many roles over the years. I've been Student Affairs and Fundraising the last few years.

Q: What committees are you involved in?

Both: Book Fair, Crab Feed, Fall Carnival, International Potluck, you name it! We wear many hats and help where needed.

Q: What motivates you to be involved in the PTO?

Amanda: Just to know the ins and outs of school life. What goes on, how to help our kids get the most out of the school. And to get to know the teachers and staff. The more you become involved, the more they get to know us.

Jen: I really enjoy being able to have that close relationship with my kids and the school. I also like being informed, and I have FOMO if I'm not involved!

Question: What are your thoughts about this year?

Amanda: It’s going to be a challenge to get people involved who have never been part of the school before. But I’m excited for the school year. No one knows what it’s going to be like, but it’s a fresh start and we’re all trying to make it through the day and through November. Hopefully we’ll be back at school soon and regarding Membership, even though you’re not seeing where the money goes (you’re not seeing the kids going on a field trip or using a chromebook at school, it’s still behind the scenes.) We're doing our best to help the school get resources and get parents involved.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

Amanda: I like to read, travel, exploring the Bay Area and California in general.

Jen: Going on walks, lots of shopping on amazon, and trying to learn all the tik tok dances from my oldest.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to a new parent looking to get involved?

Amanda: Be open to helping out as much or as little as you can. That’s really how you develop friendships. That’s how it happened for me. If I hadn’t been part of PTO, I would never have met half the people I know. There are so many different events (small and large) that you can help with. Just get your foot in the door. You learn a lot about the school doing that.

Q: Anything else you'd like to share?

Both: We're here to help and answer any questions. Glad to help orient people to their new school.

Amanda: You’ll find me around town at Starbucks most likely.

Jen: I'll be at Meadows forever!
