The Story Experiment

Meadowbrook Class of 2018


What do we really know about someone else? How can we come to know others in a more meaningful way? How can the stories of other humans change our own lives? These are all questions we asked the Meadowbrook Class of 2018 to answer over several months via an eighth-grade capstone project called “The Story Experiment.”

After performing three, 45-minute interviews with a subject, students wrote a profile of that person, a narrative from that person’s life, and finally a personal essay that reflected on his or her experience. Each student has turned this essay into a multimedia video project.

Pamela Ulrickson is the Secretary of School for the Meadowbrook School of Weston. She works behind the scenes and makes sure that everything gets done on schedule and people are where they need to be. She grew up locally in Massachusetts and lived a relatively peaceful and cheery life, however ran into some trouble with a complicated new relationship. She soon got past it and went on and leads a successful life.

Kristin Knuuttila is a lawyer who defends victims of sexual abuse, as well as a mother of three. Growing up on the North Shore, she had a nice childhood, but experienced several challenges along the way. Her story is about grappling with the pressures of her job both as a lawyer and as a parent, as well as the power of a voice.

Brian Rosborough was one of the founders of Earthwatch, a non-profit organization that funds scientific explorations. Many of these expeditions, Brian went on himself. From climbing into live volcanoes to recovering a shipwreck, Brian was always willing to take on a challenge. He possessed a characteristic that many don’t: courage and excitement in the face of danger and adventure.

Jack Fultz is a man of grit. Originating from a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania, his first pursuit of athleticism began with a paper route, and eventually led him to win the Boston Marathon in 1976. His life has been full of challenge, willpower, and overcoming adversity, all intertwined with a conscience and heart of pure honesty.

Les Silverstein is a former surgeon at Boston City Hospital, father of four boys, and currently lives with his partner Jill in Wellesley. Les grew up during World War II, and constantly feared that his father would be enlisted in the war. Les admired his father and chose to follow his father’s career path by going to med school and becoming a doctor. Les did not get paid much, but he managed to provide for his family and enjoy life at the same time.

Lucia is a college graduate from Bogotá Colombia. She grew up with her mother sister, and all of her aunts and uncles on the edge of Colombia’s capital city. When she was about 19 years old, she was drawn to the U.S because of her quest to succeed and her love of learning. Though she faced many hardships when she moved here such as homesickness and trouble finding a job, she has loved her stay in the U.S and has created a newfound connection and love with the people here.

Dan Sharplin is a former professional squash player, coach, and father of two. Dan grew up in New Zealand and at the age of 13 began working full time to support his passion for squash. At age 17, Dan left his small town in New Zealand to pursue an international career, and he now coaches at Noble and Greenough. Dan's determination in everything he does, his unparalleled work ethic, and easy going personality has left a great impression on anyone he has ever coached.

Maria Ufret is a pharmaceutical research developer who grew up in Puerto Rico with her five siblings. Maria moved to California and later to Massachusetts to pursue her graduate studies. When she moved to the contiguous United States, Maria was labelled as an international student, although she was born and raised in U.S. territory, and faced discrimination because of her cultural background. Maria has experienced several challenges through moving and has learned the importance of family.

Jack Goldsmith III is the Henry L. Shattuck Professor of Law at Harvard University, former Assistant Attorney General during the Bush Administration, passionate author, and loving father of two teenage boys. Growing up with a constant lack of a father figure has greatly affected his belief in the role of a father, and he attempts to be successful with his own kids. Jack Goldsmith’s time in the government as well as his turbulent childhood have taught him many meaningful lessons including how to make difficult decisions throughout his life.

Izabel is caretaker living in Malden Massachusetts. Her childhood in Paraná, Brazil was scary and filled with fear. After having her first daughter in Brazil, Izabel and her husband felt strongly that her daughter should not have to live in such a dangerous and unsafe place. Seventeen years ago, Izabel and her family moved to the United States for a better life. Although they were able to come to the United States, they are unable to live freely because they do not have documentation. They have lived in tremendous fear of being deported.


Rebecca Odour is an echo technician at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. Her childhood in Kenya was spent playing in the village with her five siblings, and helping out at her grandmother’s orphanage. In 2004, Rebecca decided to move to the US to pursue her interest in the medical field. After leaving her home, family, and childhood behind, Rebecca found herself in an unknown place and discovered the value of hard work and family.

Erin Bianchetto is my neighbor. She has spent her whole life in Boston learning about family values and trying to be the best mother that she can be. She currently is a stay at home mom, but hopes to go back to nursing or going to back to school to her degree in nursing.

David Canfield is a matriculate of Harvard University and current math teacher at the Meadowbrook School. Along with math, Canfield also teaches students about leadership and decision making skills on Meadowbrook’s rock wall. Although these two subjects' matters are seemingly unrelated, they are both part of Canfield’s goal of creating intelligent, caring, and active students.

Hendrata Dharmawan is currently a quantitative developer at an investment firm and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also a past silver medalist of the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad. Including these achievements, he has had amazing academical achievements throughout his life. However, his main purpose in life is his religion, Christianity.

Emma Caywood is a children’s librarian at the Wellesley Free Library. Prior to now, she has worked as a teacher, a screenwriter, and manager across three different parts of the United States. Her young life growing up in Madison, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois and how it was influenced by her very close relationship to her mother shaped her into the person she is today.

Growing up in the war-stricken country of Somalia has given Hussein Bashir a unique perspective on life and has taught him a great amount. He brought those lessons to America in 1997 where he has been living a peaceful life with his family ever since. Yet all the memories of the war and the horrors he experienced will never leave him.

Daniel Boisvert is a self-taught professional golf coach, who currently helps run a junior development program called Kohr Academy. Each day, Dan spends his time teaching his students the process of improving their golf game and life. His volatile journey from baseball, to Intel, to golf has given him a very interesting outlook on life.

Ellen Williams has many accomplishments throughout her work as a primary care physician, teacher, college advisor, and most recently in building a school located in Uganda. While this alone is impressive, she is additionally a mother of three and finds time to be generous and spend time with friends and family. She now devotes the majority of her time to her organization: The Kisoro Children’s Foundation. Passionate, positive, and hardworking, Ellen has become a role model and friend to so many people.

Growing up with Victorian- era rules in the country of Britain has given Michael Taylor a unique perspective on life and has taught him many things. He brought those lessons to America in 1960 which reflects with how he parents his family.

Sergio Roberto de Assis is a successful contractor who now runs his own business called Sergio’s Renovations. Born to a poor but hard working family in Brazil, he came to America at age 23 and worked his way up to the success he has today. Despite this success, Sergio has stayed humble all throughout his life.

Yocelin Gonzalez is a middle school spanish teacher, and the Director of Community Partnerships at the Meadowbrook School of Weston. She was born in Mexico and moved to the U.S. when she was very young. She has always striven to do her best and is very passionate about her job with helping children.

Ms. Shuler is a middle school teacher at the Meadowbrook School of Weston. She grew up with a mother, father and two siblings and when she got older, she got married and started her own family. While also being a mother, Ms. Shuler treats all of her students with the same respect, love and care as she does to her students.

David Lauten is a middle school English teacher at Meadowbrook, and he previously taught 5th grade. He grew up with his family in New York and had a great childhood. He had a strong passion for academics and did well in school. He graduated from college and in a panic decided to go to law school. He became a General Practice Lawyer for a few years. But he was miserable being a lawyer because he hated arguing. He decided to go into teaching because he loved working with kids. He got a job at the Meadowbrook School and has been teacher there ever since.

Trevor Hamilton is an alpine race coach from Franconia, New Hampshire, and has been skiing his whole life. He grew up here, and spent is childhood skiing and playing outside. He is now the head of the Loon Race Team and spends his weekends in the winter teaching little kids to ski.

Cassandra Velazquez works in admissions at a private school in Dedham. Her experience moving from Puerto Rico to the United States and having parents of two different races has helped her to expand her world view and help others to understand the experiences and struggles of others.

David Wilson is a civil rights activist who now lives in Provincetown. His story of hardship, oppression, and eventually fighting back against all of that for the right to love helps others understand what it is like to be the other.

Katrina Joseph is a recently retired Head of School who owned her own company and school at two points in her life. In her childhood, she lived with her mother, father, grandparents, and younger brother. She was taught to learn from her mistakes by the five generations of family that she knew throughout her life. She used her ambitions to further herself in life, while leaving impressions on the many children that she taught throughout her life.

Carolyn Martin is a third grade teacher at the Meadowbrook School of Weston. Growing up in Florida, she was always outside playing with her friends and creating new adventures. As she got older and had more responsibilities, her motto of working for what she wanted and staying true to herself stuck with her and has continued to. Ms. Martin teaches her third grade class with dedication and connects with each and every student, leaving a profound effect on her students.

Ellen McHale is an artist, a mother, and a board member. She grew up with a passion for art, and despite some detours into other fields, she is now a well-known artist and a board member of The Umbrella, in Concord, MA. She is a joyful, caring person and strives to get the best out of every situation.

Scott McCartney is an ex marine and now currently the head of fitness at Bosse Sports. His childhood was limited and ever since a little kid he had to work for everything he ever wanted. Even though he may seem tough and a little scary he is selfless, kind and extremely passionate about his job. Everything he strives for is for the benefit of others.

Dr. Angie Belcher is a professor and engineer at MIT University in Cambridge. She spent her childhood living in Houston and San Antonio, where she taught herself science. She grew up with multiple, ambitious dreams that she followed passionately through her life, including being a professional baseball player, an inventor, and a scientist. Now she lives with her amazing family in Boston.

John Henry Lotz-McMillen: Visit my project about Angie

Dara Carroll is an intern at The Meadowbrook School of Weston. She is a caring, compassionate teacher who has grown up in a loving environment and who has blossomed to care about important issues such as race. Dara continues to grow and share her love and knowledge to the Meadowbrook students and community.

Michael King is a film producer who lives in Lincoln, MA. He is a creative and brave person who has had quite a few life-threatening experiences. In these experiences, he has learned to be more grateful for his life, and he remembers to be grateful for it everyday.

Rev. Canon Dr. Kapya John Kaoma, born to a wealthy, royal family family in Zambia. Raised in a atmosphere of violence and fear, he emerged to become a pastor, human and LGBTQ+ Rights activist, advocating for rights for people across the world and uncovering connections between US-based anti-LGBTQ+ groups and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in countries in Africa. He talks more about these issues in his book, “Colonizing African Values: How the U.S. Christian Right is Transforming Sexual Politics in Africa.”

Karin Leschly is mom, leader, advisor, and a family medicine specialist. She is a hardworking person that strived for everything she has today. She leads an example for her family of how to work hard, be humble, be honest, and be happy. The four H’s are what Karin Leschly lives her life by, and they are what has helped her thrive.

Francis Michael Scafati grew up under many names, and he was always confused, and sometimes even bullied because of it. Many parts of his life revolve around his name including family traditions, popularity, and self confidence. His name grows and changes in sync with himself and his life. He also is moved around quite a lot from house to house, always trying to fit in.

David Maguire is a lot of things, a doctor, a retired army veteran, a father, son and brother. But more than anything else he is the sum of the many and varied experiences he has had throughout his life. From working any and every job he could think of as a kid, to enrolling in the school of foreign service at Georgetown university to be drafted as an army medic and eventually getting into medical school and becoming a doctor, David has done just about everything. These remarkable experiences are reflected in his character and his view that no matter what life throws at you, it will always be interesting.

Laurie Marie Geromini, is one of the hardest workers you will ever meet. She is currently the Director of Secondary School Counseling and the head girls lacrosse coach at Meadowbrook. Ms. Geromini comes from a loving, hardworking family, who instilled high standards in their children. She has always worked hard to achieve her goals and live up to their standards, and she has excelled in her work. Ms. Geromini is incredibly smart; growing up, she always tried her hardest and excelled in school.

Steve Caban is a member of the lunch staff at the Meadowbrook School of Weston. He also passionately coaches the squash and tennis team. His unique personality is born from his early struggles in life that he overcame to become the person he is today.

Growing up in a small town in Brazil, Mara struggled through various issues within her family. However, she emerged from her difficulties as a person with distinct family values and a mind for education. Mara holds her family values close to her and continues to pursue education by improving her English and hoping to learn more about business.

arvind grover is the seventh head of school of the Meadowbrook School of Weston. He has had to make many difficult choices in his life, one of the most important being his decision to pursue a career in education. He adores teaching and is excited to share his creativity, innovation, and knowledge with his new students.

David Sternberg is a filmmaker and the leader of the non-profit organisation Jeff’s Place. After his Father returned from the hospital after being diagnosed with Polio, it became his job to be his Father’s caretaker. David did not complain about this responsibility and still was able to make strong memories and laugh with his dad.

Sandy Lavallee is a food scientist who has had to endure much pain throughout her life. Sandy, no matter how hard it has gotten, still continues to keep a positive attitude and continues to be fun loving.

Ted Vassallo was raised in a close family that supported his dreams of art, but his whole life, he had conflicting hopes of rugby and football. He has since built his own house and found a career that he loves.

Kirsten Jane Johnson is a woman, teacher, wife, and so much more, who has gone through a long and impactful journey throughout her life. As a kid, she loved reading, and that has stayed with her throughout her life. Although middle school was miserable for Kirsten, it turned her into the activist she is today. She went through an experience during high school that changed her life by allowing her to be more open to different types of people.

Ms. Chaitali Thakar is not only a greatly respected teacher, but someone who has been strong and resilient throughout her whole incredible life. She has lived her life selflessly, constantly looking to make meaningful connections with her peers and help those in need.
