What do I have to say?
How do I say it?
Ms. Carpol's PUBLIC SPEAKING Course Syllabus
2024-2025 school year
It's time to share your voice with the world.
I am so proud of the amazing electives and extra-curricular activites YVHS has to offer students. However, we have room to grown as a school in terms of the opportunties we provide in electives relating to English Language Arts. I've chosen to address part of this need by creating a brand new course at YV -- Public Speaking.
You all have powerful ideas to contribute to the world around you. I've created this course to provide a fun, safe, and supported way for your to gain confidence in your public speaking abilities so that you can share those ideas thoughtfully and effectively. I'll also be exposing you to strong examples of Public Speaking skills through field trips across the Bay Area and collaborations with Diablo Valley Community College's Speech & Debate Club. We'll also have speakers visit our class. I'm so excited to begin this journey, together!
Course Objectives:
The focus of this ELA Elective is to prepare you for what lies ahead in high school, college, and the world beyond. Regardless of what you want to do in life, you'll need to communicate with the people around you. The more effectively and thoughtfully you can do this, the more successful your outcomes will be.
Public Speaking students will acquire and practice the skills necessary to plan, rehearse, and deliver oral presentations that reflect a clear purpose. Students will also develop the ability to evaluate a speech. Students will also learn strategies for improving their vocal and physical expression. This Public Speaking class is also designed to help students overcome speech anxiety so that they can address any group of people in any setting.
