Middle Schools in MDUSD have instrumental music as an "elective" class. This is a dedicated, graded, one-year class which meets every school day.
Middle school music teachers are excited to have students with one year of experience join their program! However, 6th Grade is also a great time to switch if your child wants to try a new instrument. Experienced students will be the class leaders: they can help classmates by modeling, encouraging, and giving them tips as they catch up and then move forward together.
Middle schools have some district-owned instruments for students to borrow for the school year, but there is a limited supply. There are more types of instruments to choose from!
If you own or rent an instrument, your child can play that instrument as long as it is a traditional band or orchestra instrument. For example:
Band I: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Baritone, Bells, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Auxiliary Percussion.
String Orchestra I: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass.
Most middle schools do not offer piano or guitar lessons, but you can ask the teacher for more information.
The middle school music teacher will have a different personality and routine, which will require some adjusting at first. Your child will soon see this new teacher as "their" music teacher and will enjoy having this class with like-minded students and new challenges.
If your child signed up for a different elective and realized music is really the place they want to be, contact the administrator and find out how to transfer into the music class!
The middle school music teacher may contact you, or, if you wish, you may contact them. See below!
