As an essential part of each school, the library media center's resources and services align with the curriculum as well as the diverse needs of the school staff and students in order to promote the achievement and development of 21st Century skills within a global community. The MDUSD teacher librarians empower students to become avid readers, critical thinkers and adept researchers.

Under the direction of the MDUSD teacher librarians, today’s library media center provides comprehensive services related to acquiring, organizing, distributing and managing information resources. The teacher librarians provide the leadership, expertise, and advocacy necessary to ensure that library media programs are aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District.

Mt. Diablo Unified is one of the few remaining school districts in the state of California to hire credentialed teacher librarians. This means that every student and staff member at every school site has access to not only a professional librarian who holds a CA state library media services credential, but in addition, that librarian also holds a CA state teaching credential. Research shows that schools with full time, credentialed librarians have higher test scores than schools without credentialed librarians.

The MDUSD teacher librarians provide a variety of services to our students and staff:

  • We encourage and facilitate students to become increasingly self-directed as they create digital products and select appropriate reading materials that engage them in critical thinking, collaboration and authentic, real-world problem solving.

  • We research, evaluate, acquire, organize, distribute and manage print, digital and related information resources in order to provide equitable access to the entire school community.

  • We collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement lessons of instruction and assessments that foster critical thinking, incorporate multiple literacies and student learning.

  • We participate in the curriculum development process both at the site and district level to ensure the curricula include the literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital and technological) necessary to meet content standards and develop lifelong learners.

  • We understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property and assist users with their understanding and observance of the same.

  • We provide leadership and expertise in the ethical use of information.

  • We provide leadership and expertise to ensure the library program is an integral part of each school.

  • We develop lifelong readers through positive experiences with books and digital media.
