FAQs about the EE:

What is the Extended Essay?

The EE is a 4000 page research paper required of all IB Diploma Programme students.

Do I have to be a DP student to write an EE?

Nope! You can still participate in writing the EE if you are only taking IB individual classes, and still reap the benefits of an individual research project while sharpening your communication and self-management skills!

When is the EE due?

Extended Essays have several mini due dates over the course of the 10 or so months that you have to work on it. The due date for the final draft is at the end of the Fall semester.

How do I get started?

Your first step is to choose your subject area. This should be an area that is strong for you, and an IB subject that you are taking a class in. There are several subjects to choose from! Some examples are math, history, literature, Spanish (language acquisition), science....you get the idea!

Next you'll want to decide on a topic. For example, if you are choosing the subject of History, you may decide on World War II as a topic. Your research question is the next step--your essay will be in the form of a question or exploration of a specific idea or ideas.

So, in a nutshell: Choose SUBJECT-->Choose TOPIC-->Write Research Question

Annotated Bibliographies

Annotated Bibliographies are a mainstay of the research process, and something that you will encounter in college and possibly even in the workforce if your work involves research.

Thanks for CSU Northridge Library, here is a brief How-To video that introduces you to the Annotated Bibliography, as well as a few pointers when it comes to citing your sources.
