Appropriate Use of AI in AP Language and Composition and Freshman English
A student's use of a generative AI program to create “their” work is plagiarism in the most basic sense: “the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.” This counts for ANY aspect of Mr. Rush's classes: Prep and Practice assignments (e.g. annotations, written responses and feedback, in-class essays, etc.) and Body of Evidence assessments (e.g. claim-based paragraphs, essays, projects, etc.). In addition to this, not making the genuine effort to compose your own work in a skills-based writing course will not allow you to develop those skills beyond where they were at the beginning of the semester. At this point, the MDIHS Academic Honesty Policy does not specifically address student use of generative AI, but our school administration has formed a design team to develop an appropriate policy by the end of the academic year.
The bottom line is if you do not intend to read the assigned texts and compose your own work, then you should take another class.
