Taking 2026 Enrolments
A Triumph of Community Spirit!
Our centre stands as a proud testament to what can be achieved when a determined rural community unites with three levels of government to prioritise our children’s future. Born from a shared vision to ensure access to quality early childhood education and care, this facility is the result of tireless collaboration and significant co-contribution funds raised by Mungindi Community Education Association (MCEA), Balonne Shire Council (BSC) and Moree Plains Shire Council (MPSC) alongside a federal grant.
We are very grateful to the NSW Department of Education for their support and guidance in assisting MPSC and community members to establish and operate an interim mobile preschool, which ran in Mungindi for 16 months whilst our new long day care and preschool facility was being built. With MPSC as the approved provider, we were able to ensure that our three-year-old children continued to access a preschool education after the Queensland preschool service closed due to changes in funding arrangements in Queensland.
Looking to the Future:
Mungindi Daycare and Preschool is currently operated by MPSC, who will remain the approved provider no longer than to the end of 2026.
MPSC has been an approved childcare provider in Moree for over 30 years at Gwydir Daycare and Preschool (GDC) Moree Plains Shire Council - Daycare and continues to operate a highly regarded service there today. However, Council determined that it did not have the long-term appetite to expand its childcare operations into Mungindi on an ongoing basis.
To ensure that families and children in the Mungindi district continue to have access to an ongoing, locally based childcare service, Mungindi Community Children’s Services Inc was formed. A dedicated group of local community members formed Mungindi Community Children's Services Inc to become the future community-based provider of early childhood education and care in Mungindi. Since its establishment, a seven-member Board has been appointed and has been working diligently to secure approval to operate as an approved childcare provider. MCCS's application is presently under assessment.
The intention is for Mungindi Daycare and Preschool to transfer to this new community-run organisation before the end of 2026. This transition represents an exciting opportunity to ensure the long-term sustainability of childcare in Mungindi, with strong local leadership, community involvement, and a continued commitment to high-quality early learning for our children and families.
