College FAQs
What are good online resources to search for colleges?
How do I make a balanced list of colleges in Schoolinks?
What do I do to prepare for a college visit and how do I get my absence from school excused if I attend during a weekday?
Please see our College Visit Checklist which will help you prepare for each visit.
Please make sure you schedule an official tour at all schools you attend to show "demonstrated interest"
Juniors and seniors are both allowed 3 excused absences a year for college visits. Please bring a note to attendance from the college's admission office after you attend.
Is there a limit to the number of colleges I can apply to?
We recommend 6-8 applications. Students may wish to submit more if they are including specialized applications like direct entry, 7/8 year programs, etc. Common App has a max of 20, but we highly discourage more than 10.
When can I start my Common App essay?
-The Common Application opens August 1st.
-You can start your essay at the end of Junior year when prompts become available. Prompts will be emailed to you and you will work on your essay in English class.
How early can I apply to college?
Students cannot apply to college until applications open. Common App opens August 1st going into Senior year.
How do colleges learn about our school? Grading, GPA, ranking, etc?
This is explained in our school profile.
Does MCST rank?
No. We do not rank. This is explained in our school profile.
Testing FAQs
When should I schedule an SAT or ACT?
-We recommend scheduling your first SAT or ACT in February or March of junior year. You will do better with more academics completed, like being at least half way through your junior year math course. There is NO rush or reason to complete this test too early.
- Do not schedule a second test date without having time to study between exams. There are testing dates over the summer and in the fall, so you will have ample opportunities to take the exams.
How many times should I take a standardized test?
We do not recommend taking a test more than three times. Statistics show little to no improvement, and sometimes a score decline after that.
How do I choose between taking an SAT or ACT? Do I take one or both?
Both are widely accepted by all Universities. See US News and World Report for more info.
You may want to consider taking a practice test for both exams and see which feels more comfortable for you. Either is fine.
What is test optional? Does it hurt me if I don’t submit scores?
-Test optional means the schools do not require test scores for their evaluation process. In general, if your score falls within that school’s range, you should submit. If your score falls below, you don’t submit, and you are not penalized for this. You can review test optional schools at fairtest.org. Fair test will show which application years are currently optional. Some schools are going back to requiring exams, so it does not hurt to have a score and try your best on the SAT/ACT.
Additional Info FAQs
When should I request Letters of Recommendation?
For Teachers:
-Consider 2 teachers to ask.
-Request IN PERSON by June of junior year.
-Complete a Teacher Brag Sheet specific to each teacher and give to them before September.
-Add them to Schoolinks in Senior year (this is your official request).
For Counselor:
-You do not need an official request, only to complete a Counselor Brag Sheet before September (link sent at end of junior year).
-A counselor letter is only sent to colleges that require them.
Where can I find my weighted and unweighted GPA? Which do colleges use?
-GPA can be found in Genesis and Schoolinks or on your transcript which you can see in genesis or request from a school counseling secretary.
-We recommend you report unweighted GPA when completing your applications.
Where do I go to apply for Scholarships?
Does MCST offer any AP classes?
No. We do not offer an AP curriculum, nor do we promote taking tests to earn college credit. Please reach out to Ms. Borzeka if you'd like to discuss further.
