Each student will have an opportunity to use the instruments and equipment of the cosmetology/hairstyling trade and to learn how to perform the operations of the trade, including the evaluation of his or her completed work.
The student will have shop experiences not only in the mastery of manipulative skills but also in related information or technology and theory. Under the direction of the shop instructor, the student will learn related information in order that he or she may have a complete understanding of why the operations of the trade are performed in a certain way.
The course will include related theory consisting of mathematics, science and art relevant to the cosmetology/hairstyling trade. Here emphasis will be placed on the mastery of fundamental concepts and principles as well as the ability to solve practical problems.
Successful completion of the course prepares the student for examinations required for licensure by the State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. The curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of these examinations as well as the requirements of the State Board of Education.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Describe career Opportunities and job and licensing requirements.
Briefly outline the history of cosmetology/hairstyling and barbering.
Demonstrate a knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations and licensing requirements.
Recognize the name and function of the various tools, implements, products and equipment in shop.
Demonstrate an awareness of the logical sequence of skills, particularly for shampoos, rinses, hairstyles, finger waves, pin-curls, roller placement, thermal curling, facials, scalp conditioning, manicures and pedicures, haircutting, etc.
Describe the type and characteristics of bacteria, and practice proper sterilization and sanitation techniques.
Describe the histology of the skin and hair.
Diagnose condition of skin and hair.
Demonstrate skills and knowledge which meets the NJ State Board of Education prerequisite of 600 hours to acquire a “Student” permit to practice cosmetology and hairstyling in a school clinic or shop while registered as a student in an approved vocational training program.
Describe constructive responses to criticism.
Practice good personal hygiene.
Demonstrate a degree of proficiency in the basic skills of the trade.
shampooing, manicuring and pedicuring; scalp treatments, facials, haircutting, hairstyling, iron curling, permanent waving, thermal waving, applying makeup, air or blow waving, hair coloring and lightening, chemical relaxing and reforming techniques. Also, hair brushing/pressing, facials, men’s styling including shaving; scissor/razor over comb; eyebrow tweezing, waxing; thermal straightening.
Demonstrate a knowledge of the sciences related to cosmetology/hairstyling – basic systems of anatomy and physiology; basic chemistry; and basic concepts of electricity and light therapy.
Advance in the skills and related theory of the trade so as to be prepared for the licensing exam and, subsequently, for entry-level employment and/or for advanced or specialized training in this career field.
Practice professional ethics and promote good public relations and job efficiency.
Demonstrate pride in work.
