Hello & Welcome to 7th Grade!
I am very much looking forward to a great school year with your child! The subjects that I teach are Language Arts and World History. In order to be successful, students need to learn to consistently come to class prepared with their assignments completed according to the stated directions. We all have deadlines in life as well as job performance expectations and consequences when we fail to meet them. Let's work together to educate your child and to prepare them to be successful in the years ahead! As I am sure you know, all students will have their own Chromebook to use both at school and at home. Most assignments, whether they are on paper or a Google doc, will be posted in Google Classroom. Parents are encouraged to check my assignment calendar on my website, https://sites.google.com/mcswain.k12.ca.us/mspeterson/home. This can be accessed either through the school website or through Aeries. You can view my class syllabus, rules, and procedures there as well. I will be sending messages and reminders home through Parent Square as needed.
Open lines of communication are crucial to student success! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about anything. I will do my very best to reply within 24 hours. I can be reached by email at rpeterson@mcswain.k12.ca.us or by phone at 209-354-2700, ext. 114.
Thank you very much,
Ms. Peterson

7th Grade ELA/History Class Policies/Syllabus
Homework/Classwork Policy: All homework/classwork is mandatory as assigned. Assignments will be posted in Google Classroom. Reading outside of class time will be assigned and is mandatory.
Free Choice Independent Reading: The value of free choice, independent reading is immeasurable. Students who read more score higher on achievement tests and do better in school. Students are expected to read at least 80 minutes per week and keep a log of his/her reading time. Student will also be required to complete monthly “Reading Rundown” logs on Google Classroom.
Absences & Make-up Work: Students will have the number of days they are absent, plus one day to turn in missed work and make up missed quizzes or tests. For example, if a student misses school on Monday and Tuesday, all work must be completed and turned in by the end of school on Friday of that same week. This will be done outside of regularly scheduled class time. Students are responsible for requesting missed assignments at an appropriate time.
Late Work Not Due to Absence/Homework Passes: It is important for students to be responsible for completing and turning in assigned work when it is due. Students may turn in one late assignment in U.S. History and one late assignment in ELA for full credit each trimester. Students must notify me by email by the posted deadline in order to use their one time pass.
Extra Credit Work: Please do not request individual extra credit work. When I do offer it, it will be only to the entire class.
Plagiarism Policy
Plagiarism can be defined as submitting another person’s ideas, words, images, or data without giving that person credit or proper acknowledgment. Plagiarism, a form of academic dishonesty, is equivalent to stealing and will not be tolerated. Because of the increased prevalence and the ease of copying other people’s work, the teachers and administration of McSwain School feel the need to inform students how to maintain their integrity and academic standards.
In order to clarify what constitutes plagiarism, you should be aware that you have committed plagiarism when you:
Use phrases, quotes, or ideas not your own;
Paraphrase the word of another, even though you may have changed the wording or sentence structure;
Submit a paper written for another class (academic dishonesty);
Submit a paper from an essay service or agency, even though you may have paid for it;
Submit a paper by another person even though he or she may have given you permission to use it;
Directly copy an assignment from another student, either with or without his or her permission;
Give an assignment to another student to copy in whole or in part and claim as his or her own.
Be aware that plagiarism may be applied to ALL assignments in class, not just papers. This includes (but is not limited to) worksheets, tests, quizzes, and bookwork. Students are expected to complete their own work.
