The title, Magis, is inspired by an aspect of Jesuit spirituality. It comes from the Latin word that means to do more or better for others, society, oneself, and God. We want our work to make this world a better place: a place of understanding, a place of big dreams and bold plans. Our hope for Magis is that it will be a place for young writers and artists to publish pieces they are proud of and that it will connect people by allowing them to share their stories.
In 2017, the creative writing students expressed interest in creating a literary magazine to provide a space to showcase the art and creative writing of Loyola students. Magis, the Loyola Sacred Heart literary magazine was born. This magazine publishes creative writing, as well as reproductions of student paintings, photography, and mixed media and ceramics projects. It is important to us that the magazine represent students from the entire school grades 9-12 and provides them an opportunity to be published and see their work in print.
This this is an entirely student-run literary magazine with the creative writing class acting as the designers and editorial board. Students decide on design elements as well as choose and edit submissions that best showcase the ideas and creativity Magis seeks to embody.
We want this magazine to last. Every class and generation of students at LSH have stories and talents to share, and we want to create a lasting space that gives them the opportunity to put those out in the world. This endeavor is funded completely through the generous donations of community members.
To create Magis, we need to cover the cost of printing. We hope to raise $2,000 to assist with these costs. We are looking for donors who are interested in helping continue the tradition of a literary magazine at Loyola Sacred Heart. Tax deductible donations of any size will help bring Magis one step closer to publication and printing.
Sponsorship possibilities:
$50 pays for the publication of one student poem.
$100 provides for the publication of original photography and art.
$150 supports the publication of a student’s short story or personal essay.
$200 sponsors a ten-page section and you will receive a complimentary copy of the magazine.
All donations are greatly appreciated, and donors will be acknowledged in Magis. Please make checks payable to Loyola Sacred Heart with creative writing in the memo line. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any question, please email us at magis@mcsmt.org. We are so grateful for your support.
Copies of Magis are $10 . You can purchase a copy from LSH by bringing a check to the front office. Back issues are also available for purchase at Shakespeare and Co. and Fact and Fiction in Missoula.
