Pinwheel

By Taylor Cooney

I think I am fragile.

Change lives in the air,

seeping into seams and fissures,

swirling and surrounding me.

At the slightest breeze,

a baby’s breath,

I snap like a bubble

stretched too thin.

Or maybe I’m like a pinwheel,

and the wind makes me spin,

so that my colors and my edges

melt together, as if I was always meant

to look this way.

The wind rushes for me,

telling me to open my arms wide,

and embrace it.

What’s so Great About Words?

By Erin Dahl

Mine aren’t natural.

Is that what makes them poisonous?

You see,

when I try,

it’s as if I’m speaking

through a sunflower

pinched

from the diverse field

of one thought.

My momentary eyes

see honey dripping from my mouth.

But, the gold vanishes

with the flap of a hummingbird’s wing,

as it composes a venomous echo

that pushes sticky sounds into my ear,

leaving a bitter taste in my chest.

I seek refuge in the field,

only to find myself

buried

in a mound of rotting life,

while a sulfurous cherry

sits

on

top.
