Montrose High School Graduation Requirements

High school is considered as a four-year course of study. Therefore, graduation requirements will be based upon credits earned in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. A minimum of twenty-four and ½ (24.5) credits must be earned in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 in order to meet graduation requirements. In addition, 15 hours of approved Community Service must be completed. Specific credit requirements are listed below. The remaining necessary units of credit will be considered as electives and may be selected from any appropriate courses in the catalog. Students, including transfer students, must meet residency requirements to graduate from Montrose High School.
English: 4 credits
Grades 9 and 10 -------- 1 credit each English or Pre-AP English
Grade 11 -------- 1 credit English 11 or AP Language
Grades 9-12 ---------- 1 additional credit (English 12, either AP Literature, Philosophy, Creative Writing I & II, Writer's Studio, Reel Lit
Mythology)
Social Studies: 3 credits
Grade 9 ---------- 1 credit World Geography or Pre-AP World Geography
Grades 10-11 ---------- 1 credit U.S. History (or AP US History)
Grades 11-12 ---------- ½ credit U.S. Government and ½ credit Economics and Global Affairs or 1 credit of AP U.S. Govt. & Politics
Mathematics: 3 credits
Grade 9 ---------- 1 credit Algebra 1 or higher
Grade 10 ---------- 1 credit Geometry or higher
Grade 11 ---------- 1 credit Algebra 2 or higher, or Extra Department Courses (Living with Math 1,2 or 3, Personal Finance, Accounting,PLTW: Intro to Engineer A&B, PLTW: Princ. of Engineer A&B, and Math Lab)
Science: 3 credits
Grades 9-12 ---------- Three credits of Science aligned to a student’s post-secondary goals are required to graduate.
Physical Education: 2.0 credits
Grades 9-12 ---------- 2.0 P.E.
Fine/Performing Arts: ½ credit
Grades 9-12 ---------- (Credit may be from any art or ceramic classes, Digital Media A , Adobe Photoshop, all band/choir classes including, Piano Lab, & Intro to Guitar)
ICAP:
Grades 9-12 --------- Passing one of the 10 Math and English Graduation Guidelines Menu Options (SAT, ASVAB, Concurrent Enrollment, WorkKeys, Capstone, etc).
Community Service: 15 hours of Service – (service may be started the first day of freshman year and must be completed by the end of 1st sem. of senior year)
Minimum Total of Specific Units of Credit Required: 15.5
Minimum Total of Elective Units of Credit Required: 9.0
Minimum Total Units of Credit Required for Graduation: 24.5
*Some alternative courses may be used by students with individual needs, as recommended by a teacher.
Note: 1 Academic credit, often referred to as a Carnegie unit, is equivalent to two semesters of credit in a specific subject.
