The Able Women
It’s news to no one that society imposes values and expectations on women that are rarely more than skin deep. All too often, women are judged by their outer, superficial selves, and real beauty – that which lies within – goes unnoticed. Even though women intuitively know their real value and the beauty of their inner spirit, the weight of it all can sometimes make even the strongest of women weary. And that’s where Able Women comes in.
Able Women is a public outreach initiative designed to spread the word about fly fishing and the many emotional, physical and spiritual benefits it brings to women. Fly fishing teaches independence, strength, and creativity. It is a sport very much defined by grace. And who understands grace better than a woman? Fly fishing binds people to astoundingly beautiful creatures that live in remarkably beautiful places. And fly fishing binds people – perhaps most importantly of all – to their inner, most beautiful selves.
My goal for Able Women is to create a website and social media platform that all women are able to connect and grow on. Able Women's mission is to highlight the health benefits of fly fishing through physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. And what a better way to do this than create a platform where women can help each other and where they connect with other women who all have the same interests.
Another cool thing I did this semester was start a fly fishing club for all students in Montrose County. The name of the club is Montrose Youth Anglers. Our goal is to create a fun club that introduces fly fishing to kids that have never tried it or have been doing it their whole lives. Due to covid however, we can’t organize it through the school until later on, so we have joined the club with the Montrose Anglers Shop in town and Ross Reels. We plan on including other companies in the future, once the club is started up. Our goal is to have the club setup by summer time, so we can do some summer activities. In doing this, I have created so many great connections. I have become really close to the Montrose Anglers Shop, and they are even willing to help with the Able Women non-profit organization. Overall, this has given me a taste of what it is like to start a non-profit or a small business.
Kelly was a fantastic mentor. I would have not been able to do this without her. When I first started I had no idea how to design a website and she showed me the correct software to use. Also whenever I needed her help she was aways willing to do so. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better mentor!
I want to thank Colleen Aller for giving me this opportunity. I have gained so much from it, and she made it possible by letting me join the team. She is a fantastic person that wanted to take over Able Women so she could change women's lives all over the world!
