Young Leaders And Influencers Are Reshaping Black Culture
SHA'CARRI RICHARDSON
Sha’Carri Richardson is known for being self expressive when it comes to her appearance. She is known for her vibrant hair and colored nails– and most importantly her vibrant smile. Sha’Carri is unapologetic when it comes to her hair and nails, for she encourages young people to embrace who they are and to be confident in who you are. As a young African American woman, she is breaking the color and gender stereotype barriers.
MARLEY DIAS
At just 11 years old, Marley launched the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign in 2015 to donate books that featured Black girls as protagonists. She did this to address the lack of diversity in children’s literature. She also wanted young readers to see themselves in a book as a representation of who they could be.
Now 18, Marely goes to Harvard. Her achievement shows that your age isn't a barrier to making a change, as she said in an interview with Forbes: "“I'm working to create a space where it feels easy to include and imagine Black girls and make Black girls like me the main characters of our lives.”

WHO ARE YOU?
On Creating Your Own Brand
Express who you are
Describe who you are
Be who you are
Anyone you can can think of as having a "brand" started by asking themselves some version of this question: Who am I? How do I create my brand, and what does this mean?
A brand is a way to share your aspirations and ideas with the world. It's your mark and how you make your mark. While many people may think I’m talking about building a business based on one's passion in life . . . that’s only one aspect of "brand creation." A brand starts with identity, what one values, and how one presents one's self as a self. It's much more than business.
A fun fact about personal branding is that we’re surrounded by personal branding/creation. For instance, being a part of a friend group helps create your brand identity as you surround yourself with people who connect, describe, and express who you are.
At Neville High, we have a club called “The 2nd Hand Guidance.” It’s filled with people who want to be there when you need them. It consists of some of the nicest people you can meet, and most importantly, you feel comfortable around them. The 2nd Hand Guidance Club is another personal brand created by Justus Bell and Jeremiah Webster with the assistance of Mr. Pealer.
I’m trying to convey that your brand can be anything, whether it be a band, a clothing business, or even a career. It reflects who you are. I personally want to become an occupational therapist because I like witnessing individuals' growth. I aspire to create a brand of guiding preteens and teenagers to God, helping them understand that they’re not alone on their journey.
MARDI GRAS V. ITALIAN CARNIVAL
Mardi Gras and the Italian Carnival are two famous celebrations that share similar roots, but are celebrated differently. Both celebrations have their origin in Christian traditions and take place before Lent, a time of fasting and reflection for many Christians.
Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras, which means “Fat Tuesday” in French, is most popular in New Orleans, but there are small celebrations all over Louisiana and parts of Mississippi. It is a day of feasting, parades, and fun before the start of Lent. People wear colorful masks and costumes, throw beads and eat rich food like King Cake. The atmosphere is lively, with music, dancing, and floats decorated in purple, green and gold, which represents justice, faith and power.
New Orleans Mardi Gras has strong influences from French culture, brought by early settlers. It has evolved into a big public party which attracts people from all over the world.
Italian Carnival
The Italian carnival, or Carnevale/Carnevale di Venezia, has its origins in Venice and is known for its elegance and tradition. The most famous celebration happens in Venice, where people wear beautiful, mostly handcrafted masks and costumes. The masks are often decorated with gold, silver and feathers, which symbolizes the rich history of Venice and also its art and theaters.
The Carnevale di Venezia is more focused on beauty and showing of wealth. Events include masquerade balls, street performances, and traditional music. Foods like frittelle, which are fried doughnuts, and chiacchiere, which are crispy pastries, are popular treats during the Carnevale.
Similarities and differences between both Carnevale and Mardi Gras are, for example, the timing, which is in both cases before Lent. Another similarity is the costumes and masks to hide people's identities. A big difference is the location, which is for Mardi Gras in New Orleans and for the Carnevale in Venice. Similar in both is the focus on food, which is mostly rich and fatty and definitely a key part in both festivals. Another difference is also the style in which people celebrate. Mardi Gras is mostly about big, loud, and colorful parties, whereas the Carnevale is about elegance and artistry. Also, they are both influenced by different cultures. Mardi Gras shows French and American influences, while Carnevale reflects Italian traditions and history.
