The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year program developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization designed for students in 6th-10th grade. The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Watkins Mill
All 9 and 10-grade students at Watkins Mill High School are automatically part of the MYP: there is no application required! The MYP coursework focuses on interdisciplinary learning, rigorous academic standards, and connections with the international community. As a result, students who choose to join the IB Diploma Programme or IB Career-related Programme for their 11th and 12th grades will find that they have been adequately prepared for the challenge and the expectations of those classes.
8th-grade students from Cabin John, Forest Oak, Gaithersburg, Hallie Wells, John Poole, John T. Baker, King Jr., Kingsview, Lakelands Park, Martin Luther King Jr, Montgomery Village, Neelsville, Ridgeview, Robert Frost, Rocky Hill, and Roberto Clemente Middle Schools who would like the challenge of an accelerated curriculum are invited to apply to the IB Regional IB Diploma Program during the fall.
The MYP Framework
Approaches to learning (ATL) – students are shown how to develop their abilities in thinking, research, self-management, communication, and social skills to help them excel in the classroom and in their community.
Global contexts – All academic work has a demonstrated relationship with the global community and the diverse cultural fabric that makes up our world.
Personal Project – In 10th-grade, all students conduct an independent study of their choice and create a project that shows off their knowledge and their passions.
Service as Action through Community Service – helping our communities brings students in contact with their community
MYP Curriculum by Subject
The program consists of eight subject groups integrated through six global contexts that provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects. Each course in the MYP is organized according to eight subject groups: Arts, Design, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education, and Sciences. Each of these subject groups has an overview that gives an overall picture of learning and the connections between each course.
