Four credits of English are required to graduate. Students in grades 9-12 complete common tasks focusing on analysis, argument and narrative skills.
COURSE SEQUENCE:
Grade 9: Honors English 9 or English 9 for ELL
Grade 10: Honors English 10 or English 10 or English 10 for ELL
Grade 11: Honors English 11, English 11, or Advanced Placement Language and Composition**
Grade 12: Honors English 12 or Advanced Placement Literature and Composition***
** AP Language: Through close readings and focused written assignments, students become more aware of an author’s purposeful use of language. As the course progresses, students become more readily able to incorporate similar rhetorical tools into their own prose as they cultivate individual writing styles. The skills developed in this course will allow students to read critically and write effectively in different modes in the college classroom and beyond.
***AP Literature: In AP Literature, students continue developing their voices as writers as they delve into characters, plot structure and themes. Through a study of novels, plays, and poetry, students gain deeper insights into the human condition and the ways in which authors construct meaning in fiction.
