Capstone Course: Engineering Design and Development (EDD)
Capstone Course: Engineering Design and Development (EDD)
Students work in teams to design and develop an original solution to a valid open-ended technical problem by applying the engineering design process. Students perform research to choose, validate, and justify a technical problem. After defining the problem, teams design, build, and test their solutions while working closely with industry professionals who provide mentoring opportunities. Student teams present and defend their original solution to an outside panel. Appropriate for 12th graders.

The Wheaton High School Engineering Programs are fortunate to have several engineering partners who volunteer and help our students. For example, representatives from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Global EEE, as well as individual volunteer engineers have spent hours working with our Society of Women Engineers Team and their Electric Vehicle Challenge. These partners have helped our girls design and implement ways to make an electric race car faster, safer, and more power efficient.
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division plays a big part in Wheaton Engineering also. Navy engineers have been mentors to students who are working on their capstone design projects. They have talked with students about possible careers in Navy engineering. They are also very involved in support for the Wheaton Robotics Team.
Wheaton Engineering has also developed a network of local engineers and former students who are now professionals in engineering fields. These volunteers spend countless hours with Wheaton students during class and after school in many areas. Many of our engineering clubs are fortunate to work with these individual partners who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences.
A separate engineering partnership with NIST formed shortly before the COVID pandemic broke out. Two senior engineers in NIST have volunteered to help Wheaton and other local high schools in their engineering education. While this relationship is still forming, the potential benefit for Wheaton students is significant.
