AP Drawing
AP Drawing is the culminating course in the Whitman Studio Art sequence, designed for artists who are ready to develop a personal voice through sustained inquiry and advanced studio practice. Building on the technical skills developed throughout the Studio Art sequence, we pursue ideas that are uniquely our own through drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media. Together, our studio community supports each artist in developing a portfolio for submission to the College Board's AP Drawing assessment through Sustained Investigation and Selected Works, revealing the evolution of ideas, artistic processes, and creative decision-making.
Throughout the year, we create approximately 15–20 works of art, drawing inspiration from influential artists, field experiences, and one another. This is not a class where everyone creates the same assignment—it is a community of artists who support one another while pursuing deeply personal ideas. Through thoughtful critique, creative risk-taking, and an inclusive studio culture, we grow as independent artists. Students may enroll in either the single-period or double-period AP Drawing option to best support their creative goals and portfolio development.
Our WWHS AP Drawing artists leave the course with a competitive AP portfolio, a distinctive artistic voice, and the confidence, independence, and creative identity of a practicing artist, strengthened by the friendships and bonds formed within the Whitman Art Department.
