About Our Counseling Program
The comprehensive school counseling program at HTES supports our school’s mission and embodies the core values of the Montgomery County School District (MCPS) in that we strongly believe in going above and beyond for, “Every Child, Every Day.” Modeled after the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) standards, counselors aspire to meet the needs of every student daily by incorporating the following MCPS values in the Counseling Curriculum: Learning; Relationships; Respect; Excellence, and Equity.
Learning- The HTES Counseling Program prepares students to be lifelong learners through the use of proactive, need-based, and restorative Tier I school counseling lessons. School Counseling lessons aim to teach students to establish a strong sense of self, embrace differences, and understand their strengths, challenges, and needs. Upon understanding themselves, students are challenged to break out of their comfort zones and navigate the following: their classroom, grade levels, our school, and their communities, as they foster healthy relationships with themselves and others.
Relationships- The HTES Counseling Program understands the salience of establishing healthy relationships and having a strong support system. Through psycho-educational learning opportunities, modeling, and restorative practices, the HTES counselors provide students with essential skills needed to build and maintain healthy and respectful relationships with themselves, and also those who differ from them.
Respect- is an essential core component of MCPS and also one of the key pillars of Tiger Pride. This essential character trait is conveyed to all students on the very first day of school and carried out throughout the school year. Counseling lessons will emphasize the following themes: Diversity; Empathy, Equity, Kindness, Leadership, and Understanding.
Excellence- The HTES Counseling Program shares our school’s mission of challenging, engaging, loving, and supporting, “Every Student, Every Day.” In addition to teachers, counselors pride themselves on displaying unconditional positive regard toward all students and perceiving mishaps as essential learning opportunities for growth. In embracing this paradigm, we believe that our students can and will achieve self-actualization or personal excellence.
Equity- The HTES Counseling Program aspires to promote the principles of equity by granting families access to essential information and community services; counseling and essential services to every student; and providing needed resources to families within our community.
