Book Wars
What is Book Wars?
Book Wars has ended for 2023 - 2024. We are the very proud owners of two District 8 trophies. Let's win the county level trophy this year!
Book Wars is a big trivia contest for readers, book nerds and bibliophiles. If you love books and love competition, this is the club for you. We have team names, costumes, trophies, prizes and more!
Mission statement: The mission of the Book Wars is to provide a robust, diverse, and inclusive school program which promotes the enjoyment of reading and conversation through the building of community and friendly interscholastic competition.
Vision statement: Provide all MCPS middle schools a fun reading enrichment program.
Program Information
Anyone who wants to participate is welcome to in the fall. In November, we will have a pretest on some of the books. Come to the interest meeting to learn more about those titles! On the pretest, the five top-scoring students from each lunch period will stay on the team and take our school to the competition in the spring, making three teams of five students each. Teams will then start meeting twice weekly before Winter Break. All meetings will be held at lunch.
Tilden is a part of District 8 which also includes North Bethesda MS, Cabin John MS, and Hoover MS. Usually there are about 100 teams across the whole county!
Team members will need to commit to read the same 20 books as all the other teams in MCPS participating in Book Wars between September and March. The books cover a variety of genres and characters. They will all be available to borrow from our school or through SORA and Hoopla, and all are MCPS-approved for middle school readers. You will have to read quickly to stay on schedule.
Being willing to read things that aren't your favorite genre is a must, as is working with others on a team. Review the book list with your parents or guardians.
There is no cost to you to participate, and parent permission is required if you get on the travel team since you'll miss classes on the day of competition.
Click here for the entire list of books we will read for 2023-2024. Review this list carefully with your parent or guardian. eBooks and some eAudiobooks will be available on SORA and Hoopla this fall and some titles will be available in print at the Tilden Media Center.
Pay attention to the morning announcements and the posts in our Media Center Canvas class so you'll know when we meet. and get other updates about Book Wars. You can self-enroll in the Canvas class here.
