Make a difference in your community while earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours! Whitman students can participate in volunteer opportunities through approved organizations, school activities, and community service projects. Visit the SSL webpage for important forms, guidelines, and information on how to earn and submit your hours.
Maryland’s Seven Best Practices of Service-Learning:
Meet a recognized community need.
Achieve curricular objectives through service-learning.
Reflect throughout the service-learning experience.
Develop student responsibility.
Establish community partnerships.
Plan ahead for service-learning.
Equip students with knowledge and skills for service.
Developed in collaboration with over 80 teachers throughout the state, Maryland’s Seven Best Practices align with national standards and are essential in creating exemplary student service–learning experiences in Maryland. All students must earn 75 SSL hours to graduate.
We hope students had a wonderful summer and a great start to the 2026-2027 school year! This is a reminder that any student who earned SSL hours this summer must turn in the SSL Verification Form to me by the last Friday in September, September 25th. You can email forms to Mrs. Mathis at Stephanie_Mathis@mcpsmd.org or drop them off at the main office.
Middle and High School students did you know that if you do 5 SSL hours outside of class every year, you will stay on track to earn the 75 hours needed to graduate.
Students can earn up to 50 SSL hours through completed MCPS core courses.
