May begin earning student service learning (SSL) hours toward the 75-hour graduation requirement the summer after completing Grade 5. Hours are accrued throughout high school.
May receive a maximum of 8 SSL hours in any 24-hour period earned outside of the instructional school day.
Must participate in community opportunities that are MCPS SSL organizations if SSL hours are desired from community involvement:
May participate in service-learning opportunities with nonprofit organizations identified with a graduation cap at Montgomery County Volunteer Center or;
May submit a completed MCPS Form 560-50, Individual Student Service Learning Request prior to earning SSL hours with any organization or opportunity that is not identified with a graduation cap at Montgomery County Volunteer Center.
May receive SSL hours for involvement in campaigns of individuals running for public office with the granting of MCPS Form 560-50. Request must be pre-approved in advance of the public service.
Must perform service under the supervision on an adult representing an MCPS SSL nonprofit tax-exempt organization. The exception is prior approval of MCPS Form 560-50, Individual Student Service Learning Request, for direct service to residents/patients in for-profit nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
Certificate of Meritorious Service/Purple Tassel:
May be recognized for exceptional service in senior year by having documented 240 or more hours of service by the April 4, 2025 (Certificate of Meritorious Service from MSDE and MCPS and a purple tassel to wear at graduation services).
Must verify service-learning experiences using MCPS Form 560-51 Student Service Learning Activity Verification, and submit it to the school-based SSL coordinator according to the following timelines:
September 27, 2024 for service completed during the summer;
January 3, 2025 for service completed during the summer and first semester;
May 30, 2025 for service completed during the summer, first semester, and second semester.
All SSL Forms for service completed any time during the current school year and the summer before the current school year are REQUIRED to be submitted to the school SSL coordinator no later than the first Friday in June.
Certificate of Meritorious Service/Purple Tassel:
Seniors May be recognized for exceptional service in senior year by having documented 240 or more hours of service by the April 4, 2025 (Certificate of Meritorious Service from MSDE and MCPS and a purple tassel to wear at graduation services).

Two Kind Works SSL Opportunities!!!
From Kind Works:
We have two SSL projects that may be of interest to students - KindSoup for Students and Adopt-a-Road outdoor cleanups.
KindSoup for Students - NEXT: Sunday, October 6th from 5 pm-6 pm (Make Tomato Basil Soup!)
This activity is great for groups or individual students looking to earn SSL hours. Before the call, students will buy and prep ingredients. During the call, students get to ask questions about the recipe, engage with other students, and deliver homemade KindSoup to different food assistance providers throughout the county.
Our weekly KindSoup Zoom cooking sessions
provide a chance for the whole family to cook and spread kindness (even!)
Adopt-a-Road Cleanups - NEXT: Saturday, November 9th from 10 am - 12 pm
This is a great outdoor community building activity! Students get to practice environmental responsibility with friends and family while earning SSL hours - win, win,win!

Student Service Learning Graduation Requirement
All MCPS students must earn 75 SSL hours to graduate from high school. Middle school and high school students should continue earning SSL hours towards their SSL graduation requirement by engaging in SSL opportunities during the 2024-2025 school year, including traditional in-person opportunities and select virtual/remote opportunities that follow the amended guidelines posted on the MCPS SSL webpage (www.mcps-ssl.org).

SSL Hours Documentation
SSL forms for service completed after June 1, 2024, should be turned into the school’s SSL coordinator by the recommended due date of September 27, 2024.
Students who wish to submit SSL forms from previous school years must write an appeal to the school’s principal outlining the circumstances for why the SSL form(s) were not turned in by the systemwide deadline. The school’s principal will consider the information presented and make a final decision about the appeal.

Please note that all SSL forms for service completed during the summer of 2024 or the 2024-2025 school year should be submitted to the school’s SSL coordinator on a rolling basis by the recommended due date of January 3, 2025, but no later than the required deadline of May 30, 2025.

SSL Awards
Any high school senior who has submitted documentation to show the completion of 240 SSL hours or more by April 4, 2025, will earn the Certificate of Meritorious Service along with a purple tassel for graduation.
Any middle school student who has submitted documentation to show the completion of the 75-hour SSL graduation requirement (for the first time in middle school) by April 4, 2025, will receive the Superintendent’s SSL Award.
The required deadline for all documentation that qualifies seniors for the Certificate of Meritorious Service and middle school students for the Superintendent’s SSL Award is April 4, 2025.
All SSL forms (MCPS Form 560-51: Student Service Learning Activity Verification form - https://bit.ly/SSLReflection) should be submitted to the school’s SSL coordinator by April 4, 2025, to be considered for these awards.
