Academy of Finance

Northwest High School

What is the National Academy of Finance and the Academy of Finance?

The National Academy of Finance is a college-preparatory program. Its mission is to encourage high school students to take courses in financial studies and related disciplines. By doing so, students gain valuable knowledge to prepare for meaningful careers in business and to build personal wealth.

The Academy of Finance is one of the four-member programs sponsored by the National Academy Foundation (AOF, AOIT, AOHT, AOE). It is a small learning community that offers high school students an opportunity to study accounting, international trade, leadership, and the use of technology in preparing for college and the financial services industry.

Perks

New York trip: The annual New York trip is a lot of fun. AOF members spend the day in the City. Last year, AOF students went to BNY Mellon bank, NASDAQ, and the financial district. It is a great way to learn and just have a good time with your friends in the academy.

Lunch and Learns: Quarterly Lunch and Learns are a real treat. AOF members invite professionals from different fields in the business world to come in and talk to us about what they do, and what we could do to get into that profession. From Entrepreneurs to Insurance agents to Accountants, AOF members have learned about a lot of different jobs. It is really cool to know what we are learning now is being applied by professionals in their respected fields.

Graduation: Academy of Finance seniors receive a graduation ceremony just for themselves and will receive a chord and medallion at the class-wide graduation ceremony for all seniors.

Distinction: Graduating from the Academy of Finance offers a level of prestige distinction which can offer an extra boost to your resumé, your college applications, and more. Academy of Finance classes also allow for students to graduate NAFTrack certified, yet another distinction to add.

(The New York trip depends on health metrics for safe travel regarding the Pandemic. When health metrics allow, the yearly trip will occur)

Internships

*Internships are handled through Mr. Ostry

The paid internship is perhaps the most memorable and critical component in the Academy of Finance experience. It is also one of the most rewarding, as it is the opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in their Academy of Finance classes in the preceding years. The end result is essential to have an enriching educational experience outside of the classroom.

A paid internship is an extension of the Academy of Finance classroom instruction and curriculum that further develops and challenges the student in a business environment. The internship is supervised by business leaders in a real-world setting. Paid internships allow students to apply what they have learned in the classroom, and establishes a valuable foundation for any career the student chooses to pursue in the future.

The student will complete their internship over the summer before senior year or during their senior school year. Although it is the student's job to get an internship as well as maintain the internship, the school's internship coordinator (Mr. Ostry) assists and monitors the student to ensure success.
