The Foundation:

In each of the four programmes of the IB (Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, Career-related Programme, and Diploma Programme) students are challenged to complete a culminating project. These projects are meant for students to use the concepts, skills, and knowledge they have gained throughout their time in their IB programme and connect it to beyond the classroom. Read an excerpt from the Community Project guide below, which discusses how MYP projects in particular progress students through the IB.

The Goal:

Through MYP projects, students experience the responsibility of completing a significant piece of work over an extended period of time, as well as the need to reflect on their learning and the outcomes of their work—key skills that prepare students for success in further study, the workplace and the community.

The Aims:

The aims of the MYP community project are to encourage and enable students to:

  • participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context

  • generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation

  • demonstrate the skills, attitudes, and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time

  • communicate effectively in a variety of situations

  • demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning

  • appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.

The Overarching Vision:

The Capstone Community Project is an opportunity for students to:

  • Inquire

    • explore an interest that is personally meaningful

    • take ownership of their learning by undertaking a self-directed inquiry

  • Act

    • transfer and apply skills in pursuit of a learning goal and the creation of a product

  • Reflect

    • recognize and evidence personal growth and development.
