Below are various writing contests that we hear about throughout the year. Please check back regularly for updates and new contests.

Contests require the work to be your original work. Most times, it is also required that you have not previously published the work elsewhere.
National Student Poetry Contest
This is an ongoing national competition. The current year closes on April 30, and on May 1 the new year begins. You can submit your work at any time.
Poems must be no more than 20 lines on any subject in any style except concrete (shape poems) or blackout.
The 2026 Local Writer’s Showcase, organized by Bethesda Urban Partnership, is now accepting submissions for the Essay, Short Story, and Poetry Contests. Visit their website for more information on requirements, eligibility, and prizes.

Stories must be between 1,500-2,500 words

Essays should be limited to 500 words or less

Poems cannot be more than 21 lines of text
