IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

What is MYP?

Middle Years Program

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an internationally recognized educational framework and not a curriculum designed for students ages 11–16 (Grades 6–10).

At Silver Creek Middle School, the MYP provides students with meaningful learning experiences that connect classroom lessons to the real world. Instead of memorizing information in isolation, students learn how to:

Think critically
Solve problems
Communicate effectively
Apply their learning in authentic and real-world situations.

The MYP prepares students not only for high school but also for college, careers, and lifelong learning.

At Silver Creek Middle School, the IB Middle Years Programme empowers every student to become a curious learner, a confident thinker, a compassionate leader, and a responsible global citizen. Through engaging, real-world learning experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to thrive in high school, college, careers, and an ever-changing world.

Approach to Learning Skills (ATL skills)

The Approaches to Learning Skills (ATL skills) in the MYP are a set of skills that teach students how to learn effectively. These skills help students become organized, thoughtful, collaborative, and resilient learners who are prepared for future success. ATL Skills are developed across every classroom, every subject, and every grade level.

ATL Skills are not taught as a separate class. Instead, teachers intentionally integrate them into daily instruction so students practice them in meaningful ways throughout the school day. These skills support students in becoming successful academically and socially in middle school and throughout their lives.

Students who develop strong ATL Skills are more likely to:

✔ Take ownership of their learning.

✔ Stay organized and prepared.

✔ Think critically and solve problems.

✔ Communicate effectively.

✔ Work collaboratively with others.

✔ Set goals and monitor their progress.

✔ Adapt to new challenges with confidence.

✔ Reflect on feedback and continuously improve.

These are the same skills that colleges, employers, and community leaders value in successful adults.

At Silver Creek Middle School, we intentionally teach and reinforce Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills in every classroom because we believe every student can grow into an independent, confident learner. Through engaging instruction, meaningful collaboration, reflection, and real-world learning experiences, students develop the knowledge, habits, and transferable skills needed to succeed in high school, college, careers, and life. Together with the IB Learner Profile and the MYP framework, ATL Skills empower students to learn with purpose, lead with empathy, and make a difference.
