School Counseling Team

Mr. Dixon

Hello Everyone,

My name is Fabian Dixon, and I am entering my second year as school counselor at Rosemary Hills Elementary this upcoming school year. I am so excited and cannot wait to see everyone this school year. Here is an introduction so you can learn all about me.

My name is Fabian Dixon. I have a B.A in Psychology from Clark Atlanta University and a M.A in Sports Exercise Psychology from Argosy and I also graduated from the University of Southern California master’s degree program in School Counseling. I was always an athlete and athletics became my respite. As I grew, I began to think deeper about wellness and exercise science. I continued my quest for understanding as I enrolled in Clark Atlanta University.  I decided to major in Psychology because I wanted to continue my exploration into the mental and physical connections. Through my work in the Psychology department, I accepted an internship with Dr. Tamica Jones; an internship opportunity where I worked with a variety of athletes on and off the field. My internship helped me conduct my research on how students as athletes handle stress at practice, and how they perform in the classroom. My research focused on whether certain athletes were stressed because of their classes or because they were not getting any playing time.

The coaches were also a part of my research study. I wanted to know if when the coaches yell at their players if it made them more stressed out and whether it made them perform better or worse at practice or at the big game.  Sport Exercise Psychology was always one of my passions which is why I wanted to advance deeper into wellness and exercise science. But as years passed, I started looking deeper into education/counseling because I was working at the YMCA and I started to develop another passion, working with children in a school setting in urban areas. Working at the YMCA for 4 years, I always felt that I related to other people, groups, cultures, or experiences that were different from my own. My job is to make a difference in kids' lives.

My counseling philosophy is to help maximize students' success and promote access and equity for all students. I give students the necessary support to understand themselves and their needs, to solve their problems, to make realistic decisions, to improve their abilities and skills, and to adjust themselves and their environment. My counseling theoretical approach is Adlerian Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Behavior Therapy, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. When it comes to students' social emotional well-being, which is the ability to understand and manage our emotions and to form social connections and relationships with the world, my approach is to equip students with the social emotional skills which will provide them with the ability to cope with and manage their feelings and their responses. These skills are skills like self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills.
