Below is a description of what students will focus on in the month of April:
Kindergarten (weekly): During the first week after spring break, students will be voting on their favorite Black-Eyed Susan book. Students will do a quick review of all the books. Then we will read a book about voting. Students will vote in our "ballot box" and we will count the votes. During the next week, we will have one of our digital citizenship lessons, called "Safety in My Online Neighborhood" from Common Sense Media. During the final week of April, we will read a book about recycling and other ways to help the environment to celebrate Earth Day.
1st Grade (bi-weekly): For the first two weeks after spring break, students will be voting on their favorite Black-Eyes Susan book. Students will discuss the books first, then fill out a brief assignment sheet stating why they chose the book they are voting for. Finally, students will vote on their favorite in the "ballot box" and we will count the votes. During the last week of April/first week of May students will have a lesson on "My Digital Footprint", one of our digital citizenship lessons, from Common Sense Media.
2nd Grade (bi-weekly): For the first two weeks after spring break, students will be voting on their favorite Black-Eyes Susan book. Students will discuss the books first, then fill out a brief assignment sheet stating why they chose the book they are voting for. Finally, students will vote on their favorite in the "ballot box" and we will count the votes. During the last week of April/first week of May students will have a lesson on "Using Tech to Learn New Things", one of our digital citizenship lessons.
3rd Grade (bi-weekly): We will read a native American folktale, to complement the CKLA unit, and identify customs and cultures of native American tribes. Third graders have been asking to use the "finch robots" again. During the latter part of April we will solve math problems, and code the finch robots to follow a route that is determined by the math equations.
4th Grade (bi-weekly): In the first two weeks after spring break, students will have a Common Sense media digital citizenship lesson called "S.I.F.T. for sources: How can we tell if the information we see online is credible." In the end of April/early May, the lesson will relate to fourth grade students' study of the American Revolution from their CKLA curriculum.
5th Grade (bi-weekly): In the first two weeks after spring break, fifth graders will have a Common Sense media lesson called "Remix Responsibly", about plagiarism and copyright issues. In the end of April/early May fifth graders will learn how to use Noodletools, an MCPS-subscribed application for creating a bibliography.
