Student placement in ELD classes is determined by the International Admissions and Enrollment Office of Montgomery County Public Schools. These classes are designed for students with limited proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, or writing English. This special instruction in English is given until the students are ready to be mainstreamed into the regular English program. Additionally, students receive orientation designed to allow them to explore American and world cultures as well as to prepare them for the American educational system. ELD classes use the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum that is also being implemented in the regular English classes.
