Summer Jobs Fair Set for Saturday, February 17, in Silver Spring

Department of Recreation is Hiring Hundreds of Summer Employees;

Saturday, February 17, from noon to 3 p.m. at the East County Community Recreation Center, 3310 Gateshead Manor Way, in Silver Spring.

Gaithersburg Book Festival, Junior Achievement Essay Contests Open!

Gaithersburg Book Festival is giving high school students the freedom to explore their writing creativity for its short story contest.

There are cash prizes available for first, second and third place winners.

Stories cannot exceed 1,000 words and must be submitted electronically via a web form by midnight on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018. Complete rules and regulations can be found online.

The 2018 Junior Achievement Essay Competition application is officially open. High school students have until Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 to submit an application and a 1,000-1,500-word essay.

This year’s topic is: “Several great entrepreneurs, including Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, dropped out of college before getting their degrees. How important do you think a college education is to your future success?”

Essays will be judged on creativity and originality; persuasiveness; grammar and spelling; understanding of subject matter; and relevancy of response to topic question. The grand prize winner will receive a $20,000 award; first, second and third place winners will receive $10,000.

Create a 30-60 second public service announcement (PSA) video or artwork about one or both of the following topics:

1. Tell your peers the importance of not walking or driving distracted.

2. Tell adults the importance of not being distracted while driving, especially in school zones.

Contest Rules:

  • To be eligible, all members of the team must be enrolled in Montgomery County Public Schools.
  • Entries must be an original product.
  • Entries must be created groups of two to eight students.
  • Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 16, 2018. Written entries must be submitted via the online submission form. Visual arts entries may be dropped off at the Public Information Office, 850 Hungerford Dr., Room 137, Rockville, MD 20850, or in the main office of the students’ school. Students must include their names, grade levels and school name on the back of the entry.

Students Can Download Microsoft Office at Home for Free - Montgomery County Public Schools

The Maryland Department of Education and Microsoft have entered into a collaborative partnership that allows all students to get the latest version of the Microsoft Office software suite, Office 365 ProPlus, at no cost. Office 365 ProPlus includes the full suite of Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as the ability to create, save and share Office files online. Under the program, students and staff are able to download and install the Microsoft Office software on up to five devices free of charge. The devices may be PCs, Macs, tablets or phones.
