Helping Struggling Readers

Reading Rockets has a great section titled Target the Problem!, which is  a tool to help parents and classroom teachers understand the specific problems a child may be having with reading. You'll find practical suggestions on what you (and kids themselves) can do to help students overcome or deal with their reading difficulties in the following areas

Specific Reading Strategies

Studying for a test

Here are a few quick tips that have worked for many students in the past! Everyone is different and different methods work for different people. The following are only suggestions on improving upon your current studying techniques.

1.     Create Flash Cards of vocabulary words or key terms. Search for already made flashcards here or make your own!

2.     Set up a “Study Space”.  This should be a place where you feel comfortable sitting for a long period of time.  This space should be well lit and free from distractions.

3.     Have a friend quiz you on information… here is you excuse to use text or call each other over the phone.

4.     Walk around the room as you are reading your notes.  Sometimes walking around and getting your blood flowing, will help you remember information.  Also chew gum  as you study.

5.     Use a stress ball in your hand to help you focus and keep your fingers busy as you read your notes and review information

6.     Make a study schedule and stick to it!  Study your notes every night and review information.  The more often you study it, the better you will remember the information

7.     STAY ORGANIZED!  Keep a table of contents for your binder section.  This way you have all the info to study for the quiz.

8.     Complete review sheets.  If given the chance to complete it, do it… this way you know exactly what to study!

9.     Always complete your homework, this will help you to learn the material and master the material that will be on the test.

10.   Ask questions on things you do not understand.  Your teachers are here to help.

11.   Take short breaks frequently, you memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle.

12.    Listening to relaxing music such as classical or jazz on a low volume can relieve some of the boredom of studying.  If the music is distracting, then study in silence.
