FIRST YEAR STUDENTS - Summer Assignment
(IB Juniors, IB Seniors & AP students)
Watch this video to illustrate what a good museum visit looks like:
Materials You Will Need:
Visual Journal/Sketchbook
Various drawing pencils/ink pens
Phone to take a photo (only if you are allowed!!!)
Project Process Overview:
Visit a Museum
Choose a minimum of 2 artworks by different artists (try to choose very different pieces, like a painting and a sculpture or perhaps a portrait and an abstract piece)
Spend a minimum 30 minutes in front of each artwork creating a 2 page spread on EACH
Follow up with 1 page of reflection & research on EACH artist and art movement or cultural/period influences
This assignment is DUE on Monday, August 26, 2023.
Project Process Specifics:
Visit a Museum
Familiarize yourself with what you are going to see. Check out the website. Note exhibitions you plan to see. What are the key themes, styles & artists? Understand the cultural context & background.
Keep a record of info you’ve seen/collected. Think ticket stubs, brochures, etc.
Know the rules before you go. Ask before you take a picture.
Ask the ushers! It never hurts to ask the people who work in the museum if they know anything about the work. Many ushers get bored of just standing there all day. They look at the pieces and hear the tours… they’ll probably be able to tell you something interesting about it. And if they don’t, no big deal!
Choose a minimum of 2 artworks
Walk around before you just choose a piece of artwork at random. Make notes of pieces you like as you go so you’ll know where to find what you liked.
Try to choose 2 pieces that are different. Example: A Painting vs A Sculpture or A Portrait vs An Abstract Landscape
Find the best place to observe your selected work. Move close, move far away, move around it if you can. Find the view that is most engaging to you.
Record the artwork in 2 page spread (spend 30 minutes minimum on each work)
Write important information for each artwork (2 minutes):
Artist’s Name,
Title of the Work,
Date it was Created,
Medium
Style/Period or Room name
Sketch out the entire artwork in your journal (10 minutes).
The goal is to register the image in your mind. Use the full 10 minutes. Force yourself to draw everything you can.
Make notes around the sketch (10 minutes)
Describe what you see in the artwork. Figures, colors, shapes, etc. Imagine you are describing it to a blind person.
remind yourself of specific things you don’t want to forget. Make thumbnails of details that you want to remember. Capture (whether in writing or by drawing) how the piece feels in the space. Make notes of what you hear other viewers say about the piece.
Note specific Elements of Art or Principles of Design you see (10 minutes):
Elements of Art Principles of Design
Line Pattern
Shape Contrast
Color Emphasis
Form Balance
Texture Proportion
Space Harmony/Unity
Value Rhythm/Movement
***See the formal analysis at the end of this document for more Guiding Questions in your Formal Analysis. Also find a helpful handout here.
When You Get Home, Reflect on 1 page in the journal for EACH work
Consider these Questions
What was the most interesting thing about this show? For example, how was it curated, the space, themes addressed, individual artists, etc.
Did you especially like or dislike the work? Explain why using subject-specific language (art vocabulary)
Were there any themes, ideas or materials that you are exploring in your own work that you would like to try out?
Research the artist and the period in which he/she/they made their work
What influenced the artist
What was their cultural heritage?
Were there any major events that influenced their work?
Is there any information you’ve discovered about them that makes them connected to you and your work?
Make notations in your journal of any sources you use for this research.

SECOND YEAR IB STUDENTS - CS Artwork
(IB Seniors who took my class in the 2023-2024 year)
Please find the examples provided on the Comparative Study page in this site.
This year you created your Comparative Study. Over the summer, you should be incorporating the feedback that I have given you earlier in this school year to complete and revise your Comparative Study. *If I did NOT give you feedback, please email your most updated version of the CS to me as soon as possible and I will do my best to get you feedback within 48 hours.
I will be checking in with you at the beginning of the school year to see how your revisions have developed. Please have work for me to review!
Additionally, as 2nd year students you need to create an artwork that connects to your 3 artworks, in
theme,
formal qualities and
cultural significance.
They can be similar or different but you will need to compare and contrast your work with the subject works of your study.
When you are creating this work, be sure to follow the process in your visual journal in the same way that we have completed work throughout this year. That means you must have:
At least 2 pages in your visual journal of inspiration, research and ideas/concepts (these should be your thoughts about the 3 artworks you've selected for the CS)
At least 2 pages in your visual journal of experimentation with various media, practice with the selected media & compositional experimentation
5 photos of the work IN PROCESS from start to finish
A final artwork to present on Day 1 of school
If you are struggling with any part of this assignment, please reach out to me via Remind, email or text. Do not put this off. You should be finishing your EE this coming year, so let's get the Comparative Study over and done with.
HL (+ 3-5 screens): Connecting to own art-making practice
A reflection on research outcomes and the extent to which your own art-making practices and pieces have subsequently been influenced by artworks, objects, artifacts and their creators examined in the comparative study. These influences and personal connections, which should be evidenced in both visual and written forms, might include:
• cultural context
• formal qualities
• function and purpose
• materials, conceptual and cultural significance.
When referring to your own artwork and practices, you must identify and acknowledge your own artworks with the same rigorous attention to detail as with images from other sources.
