We at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School would like to encourage students to explore Mathematics in a global context in order to assist them in their journey to becoming lifelong Mathematicians and Thinkers.
We encourage you to contact your teacher with questions, and as we continue through this journey together, we will update FAQ's and Answers here.
Q: My child is taking AIM6 (or IM7, or Hon.Geometry), and did not receive a workbook. Should we get one?
A: No, the Applied IM, IM, and Hon. Geometry courses are using online materials only this year and are not receiving workbooks or packets at this time.
Q: My child is taking the new Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum, what should we expect?
A: The new curriculum provides a opportunity for students to spark discussion, perseverance, and enjoyment of mathematics. The curriculum is problem-based core curricula rooted in content and practice standards to foster learning and achievement for all. The students will learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language.
Q: I have a question about my child's math course. Who should I contact?
A: Depending on your question, please contact the teacher first, then the grade level counselor. They will be able to direct questions to the Content Specialist and Administrators if needed.
Q: How are the lessons designed in the new Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum?
A: The lessons are designed with a focus on independent, group, and whole-class instruction, building mathematical understanding and fluency with all students. Teachers will also use Warm-ups and Cool-downs to help guide lesson pacing and planning.
