"Grow Where You Are Planted"

I am so excited to be joining the AES Staff. I have worked in the building for the last 6 years as a regular substitute and volunteer. I knew I was ready to return to full time teaching and look forward to spending the year in 5th grade. I can't wait to watch students grow and learn this coming year.

A little about Mrs. Funk:

I was born in Fairfax County, Virginia and grew up in Manassas, Virginia about 45 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. I graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. While in high school I knew that I wanted to become an elementary school teacher because I loved working with kids! I attended Virginia Tech for 5 years- receiving both my Bachelor's and Master's Degree for Elementary Eduction. GO Hokies!

I started my teaching career in Roanoke City. I taught at Westside Elementary for 3 years before transferring to MCPS. I taught at Christiansburg Primary for 3 years before taking some time to stay home with my young children.

My husband Stephen and I have lived in Riner since 2012. Our two oldest children- Alyson and Jameson, both attended AES and are now at AMS. Our youngest son Jackson will start Kindergarten in 2 years. We have two cats- Tapper and Dee- both named after Hokie athletes.

When we aren't in school we are usually on a soccer field, track or baseball field with our kids. We also enjoy attending Hokie sporting events and taking hikes. Movie nights are also a big favorite. We watched the entire Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy series during our extended time at home last year. We are currently working our way through the Harry Potter series for the second time.
