The goal of the BHS Bird Club is to bridge the gap between the youth of the New River Valley and the incredible source of knowledge, mystery, serenity, and joy that lies within birding and the understanding of birds.
At the club, students will learn the basics of bird identification, discuss what birds are been seen, why they're being seen, the behaviors they are exhibiting, and more. During some meetings, speakers with expertise in birding and/or ornithology will join us. Additionally, club members will be invited to optional out-of-school field trips with the New River Valley Bird Club to connect the groups.
Our community service projects this school year include
1.) Monitoring and maintaining 27 bluebird boxes on the school's property
2.) Hosting a community outreach/fundraising "Birding Big Day"
Blacksburg High School, Mr. Miller's room, G337.
Club meetings are hosted on Wednesdays after school (3:00 - 4:00), except for the second Wednesday of the month. Some days may be delayed due to inclement weather or testing; please email Xavier Gitre (xaviergitre@mcps.org) to check the status of meetings.
Please email xaviergitre@mcps.org, we would love to have you!
If you are not attending Blacksburg High School but are still a young birder in the area, you are still welcome! Please reach out to the email above and we will sort out any details as soon as possible.
