Modern World History

Course Description

Modern World History introduces students to numerous people, events, and movements that have contributed to the acknowledgement and protection of human rights for billions of people worldwide. However, despite the progress that has been made over the last 500 years, human rights violations still occur in both the developed and developing worlds. With that in mind, the goals of this course are threefold:

1) To provide a historical narrative that identifies key people, events, and movements that contributed to the advancement of human rights for some people

2) To encourage students to recognize the lack of equity that exists in both the acknowledgement and protection of human rights for certain people and groups of people

3) To develop compassionate and knowledgeable citizens who have the ability to advocate for universal human rights

Put another way, this course seeks to play a small and humble role in, “[facilitating] the creation of a world where people treat each other with respect and dignity; where peaceful solutions are sought between individuals, groups and nations; where every man, woman and child may enjoy their rights.”
