Course Description

Napoleon Bonaparte once remarked, “What is history, but a fable agreed upon?” It is with this sentiment in mind that students will study our nation's shared history from 1945 to the present.

The goals of this course are:

  • To provide a balanced historical narrative that allows students to explore multiple perspectives on a given topic
  • To foster opportunities for students to grapple with numerous inequities that continue to plague our society
  • To develop compassionate and knowledgeable citizens who have the ability to advocate for positive change

To that end, in addition to demonstrating conceptual knowledge of recent United States history, this course focuses on improving the following skills: sourcing, corroboration, contextualization, verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and historical document analysis.

Topics of study include: The Cold War, Civil Rights, Vietnam War, Culture of the 1970s/80s, terrorism and globalization.

Give these podcasts a listen!

BackStory is a public radio program & podcast that brings historical perspective to the events happening around us today. On each show, renowned U.S. historians Ed Ayers, Peter Onuf, and Brian Balogh tear a topic from the headlines and plumb its historical depths. Over the course of the hour, they are joined by fellow historians, people in the news, and callers interested in exploring the roots of what’s going on today. Together, they drill down to colonial times and earlier, revealing the connections (and disconnections) between past and present. With its passionate, intelligent, and irreverent approach, BackStory is fun and essential listening no matter who you are (BackStory).
