All CTE courses offered at Valley Community School is for students to acquire real world hard and soft skills as well a plan for career success.
We show students specific careers that reflect their aptitude and/or interest. From the list of careers, students will then do research to better understand what the careers consist of and the process for obtaining that career. Once aptitudes and interest careers have been identified, the student is assisted in making a career portfolio.
Students are then taught about resumes, cover letters and job applications which also become part of the career portfolio.
Upon enrollment at Valley Community School each student is counseled to make a graduation or a "get back on track" plan.
Students are kept on their path by their teachers and counselors. Teachers and counselors are required by policy to council students and notify parents once they start to fail a class. Teachers are also obligated to remediate or incorporate tier 2 or 3 interventions.
This site has flex block scheduling. The first block of the school day (8:30-9:28) is a one hour flex/elective class. During flex class (study hall) students can receive additional help in the form of tier interventions or enrichment activities.
As a program, our CTE coordinator instructs educators to track alumni after 2 years of course work (known as "pathway completors"). Currently our Public Services Pathway is in its second year. Pathway completors for 23-24 school year will be contacted in early 2025.
Each year, I provide graduates with my e-mail and phone number for future reference. Graduates are instructed to call or e-mail in the event they need anything.
Students are then taught about resumes, cover letters and job applications which also become part of the career portfolio. The career portfolio is a virtual Google DOC which they have access to at any time during their high school career and afterwards.
A "Portfolio Day" is scheduled each year for students to participate in a mock job interview with community professionals. This day is a culmination of the skills and and knowledge they have learned. Students are expected to dress to impress and answer questions, the like, one would expect during an actual job interview. Students are then scored on their responses, appearance and portfolio items.
Highest scoring "Portfolio Day" students will be awarded with certificates of achievement by MCOE and legislators of California (see images below).
